Venice wants to host the 2020 Olympics
Venice, Italy’s city of love, is bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games. First, however, Venice must beat domestic rival Rome in the contest to become Italy’s candidate to host the Games.
Venice or Rome: Who will win the bid to host the 2020 Olympics?
Rome and Venice submitted their bid documents to the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) in March 2010. The committee now faces the difficult decision of whether to put Rome or Venice forward as Italy’s candidate to host the 2020 Olympic Games with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The capital, Rome, previously hosted the Summer Olympics in 1960.
2020 Olympic Games: The Italian candidate faces strong international competition
The decision on where the 2020 Olympic Games will be held will be made at the IOC session in Buenos Aires in 2013. Whether it is Venice or Rome, international competition to host the 2020 Olympic Games is fierce: Madrid and Tokyo have already expressed concrete interest in hosting the 2020 Olympics. South Africa, Morocco and Dubai are also reportedly considering bids for the 2020 Games. But first, Italy’s Olympic Committee must resolve the question: Should the Olympic flame burn in 2020 in the “Eternal City” of Rome or in the lagoon city of Venice?
2020 Olympic Games: The whole of Veneto is to be involved
Although it has not yet been decided whether Venice will beat Rome in the domestic contest to host the 2020 Olympics, plans for how and where the events would be held are already well advanced: not only Venice itself, but the whole of Veneto is to be involved. The Olympic football tournament matches would be played in Udine, Verona, Trieste and Vicenza. Treviso would host canoeing, rugby and cycling events, while equestrian events, shooting and badminton would take place in Padua. In the lagoon city itself, archery and hockey are planned for Parco San Giuliano, while Jesolo is slated to host the marathon and beach volleyball.
