Este – History, Trails and Venetian Culture
Accommodation in Este
Este between hills, history and everyday life
Este combines historical evidence with trails through the landscape of the Euganean Hills. The Sentiero del Principe begins in Este on Via dei Cappuccini, next to the Arco del Falconetto in the historic centre. Along its route, it conveys the landscape transition between the Euganean Hills and the surrounding Venetian plain. When you choose accommodation in Este, you can therefore experience the character of the town through both its history and its trails and public transport connections.
Trail and travel orientation
Another documented way to explore Este is the Guido-Negri Route. It takes about an hour and is accompanied by a map and prepared texts that guide visitors through an immersive experience. For travel to Este, the town has a railway station on the Padua–Mantua railway line. In addition, the equipped bus stop for the bus routes is located on Via Martiri della Libertà , just a few steps from the Castello Carrarese.
The Castello Carrarese and medieval traces
The Castello Carrarese represents an important period in the town’s history. Ubertino da Carrara had Este’s defensive complex built and, in 1339, continued the transformation of the Castello Carrarese into its present form. Two medieval archaeological areas are currently set up for visits within the complex. One is located in the basement of the museum and is accessible only with permission. The second lies at the summit of the hill where the core of the first Este castle stood. For your visit, the different access regulations for the two areas are therefore particularly relevant.
Museums, paintings and churches
The Museo Nazionale Atestino displays finds from the Euganean Hills. They document human life and human activity from the Middle Palaeolithic through the entire Bronze Age. In the town’s art history, another work leads to Este Cathedral: the painting Santa Tecla by Giambattista Tiepolo tells of the plague that struck the Este area in 1630 and was installed in the cathedral on 24 December 1759.
The Palazzo Mocenigo also preserves a distinctive artistic connection. The ceiling of Room 4 is decorated with scenes from Torquato Tasso’s Gerusalemme Liberata from 1581. The Chiesa di San Martino is the oldest religious building in the town of Este. Its medieval structure has been preserved; Romanesque-Gothic elements are particularly visible in the apse area and the bell tower. The Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie houses a Byzantine icon of the Madonna delle Grazie, which was enthroned in 1479. The basilica was founded in the 15th century at the behest of Marquis Taddeo d’Este.
Market, cuisine and further experiences
Part of everyday life in Este is the weekly market, held in the historic centre every Wednesday and Saturday. Culinary specialities are also documented: Schizzotto is highlighted as a typical baked product of Venetian cuisine associated with Este. Venetian cuisine as highlighted in Este also includes traditional dishes based on polenta and Stracotto d’asino.
As an additional option, Este’s municipal swimming pool is intended for swimmers and water enthusiasts of all ages, with use available in winter and summer. In this way, historical visits, trails, a market visit, regional cuisine and an offering for water enthusiasts come together to represent different aspects of the town.
