Polverara combines historic landmarks, agricultural culture and a section of the Bacchiglione Cycling Route. This gives you several clearly distinct points of reference when planning your trip: you can explore churches and historic buildings, learn about the development of rural life or consider a section of the cycling route along Via Isola dell’Abbà.

Culture between Polverara and Isola dell’Abbà

One of the area’s prominent historic buildings is Torre Colombara. It is the only surviving evidence of the former Monastero di Santa Maria della Riviera in Polverara. The square building has sides measuring 6 metres, three above-ground floors and a maximum height of approximately 13 metres. Torre Colombara stands on the left bank of the Bacchiglione, at the southwestern edge of the municipality of Polverara. Its former connection with the monastery and its clearly documented dimensions make it a particularly tangible part of the town’s history.

In Isola dell’Abbà stands Villa Priuli Rezzonico, which was built in the 16th century and extensively altered in the second half of the 19th century. The complex includes several barchesse and covered ancillary buildings, a garden and a brolo enclosed by an elegant wall. The villa also contains an 18th-century Madonna and Child statue made of Istrian stone, known as the “Madonna del fiume”. Also in Isola dell’Abbà, the Chiesa di San Leonardo is dated to 1172.

Churches and Museum as Distinct Points of Interest

The present-day structure of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Fidenzio in Polverara dates from 1899. Together with the church in Isola dell’Abbà, dated to 1172, and the considerably older Villa Priuli Rezzonico, this does not form a single architectural monument but rather a succession of different historical periods.

Another way to explore the area’s history is the Museo della Civiltà Contadina at La Masseria. The Veneto Region recognised it as a museum in 2018. Anyone interested in rural life and its material heritage will find a distinct focus here alongside the churches and villas.

Cycling Route and Agricultural Character

Within Polverara, the Bacchiglione Cycling Route runs southwards for approximately 4 km along Via Isola dell’Abbà. This is an approximate route length and refers to the section within Polverara. The route can therefore be considered a separate aspect of getting your bearings in the area, without equating it with the historic sights.

The Gallina di Polverara is part of the area’s agricultural character. It is raised for the production of eggs and meat and is known in the White and Glossy Black varieties. At La Masseria di Polverara, the Fattoria Didattica includes phytoremediation ponds, enclosures for donkeys, sheep, rabbits and pigs, an aviary, a chicken coop and a hatchery. These facilities make the area’s agricultural themes visible across several different areas.
