Valle San Giorgio stretches through a quiet valley between the mountains Monte Gemola and Monte Mottolone. The area combines historical landmarks with trails through the landscape of the Euganean Hills. If you want to identify a place with specific cultural and natural points of reference for your trip, the key landmarks are located around Villa Mantua Benavides, the parish church of San Giorgio and Monte Gemola.

Historical traces around the church and villa

Villa Mantua Benavides is a historic residence near the parish church of San Giorgio in Valle San Giorgio. It was built at the end of the 16th century by the heirs of Marco Mantua Benavides. Its history extends beyond its original use: in 1762, Bishop Giustiniani rented the villa as a rectory for the clergy. It also hosted Cardinal Rezzonico, who later became Pope Clement XIII. Today, it is home to Eugheneis – Centro di Formazione e Promozione Culturale – in Valle San Giorgio. The church itself also offers several clearly distinguishable historical details. San Giorgio in Valle San Giorgio was first mentioned in a public document from 1293. The main altar features an early 17th-century painting depicting Saint George and the dragon. Remains of a Roman tomb have also been preserved in the southern wall. Those who want to explore the area's history not only through individual dates but also through architecture, art and older traces will find several themes in a closely defined location here. Parco Romanato is located on the former Brolo, the villa's former garden and orchard. It was designed as a meeting place for the local community and visitors, combining well-being, environmental awareness and the memory of the area. The former garden complex is therefore also part of the historical orientation around the villa, although its present-day significance should not be equated with its original use.

Trails between Valle San Giorgio and Monte Gemola

For choosing a trail, the starting point is particularly clear: the circular trail around Monte Gemola begins at Villa Mantua Benavides and passes beneath the bell tower of the parish church of Valle San Giorgio. Parco Romanato is also an intermediate stage of the Sentiero Beata Beatrice. From there, the ascent to Gemola begins before the return loop is completed. The Sentiero Beata Beatrice is considered walkable year-round. For this trail, cars can be parked in Valle San Giorgio at Parco Romanato or opposite the church. An alternative circular hike is the Valle San Giorgio–Baone–Este route, listed as 6.63 km long.

Landscape and regional insights

Villa Mantua Benavides is located in the protected landscape of the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills. The MUSeuM, the Museo degli Euganei, in the associated municipality offers a broader view of this natural area. It is located in Villa Beatrice d’Este on Monte Gemola in the municipality of Baone. The MUSeuM tour is divided into nine themed rooms. The natural history section presents the flora and fauna of the Colli Euganei through audio and video content activated by proximity sensors. Regional history is also conveyed on site. La Corte Medioevale was founded in 1990 in Valle San Giorgio di Baone to revive historical events and old traditions of the Euganean Hills. The organization hosts historical events, medieval processions and exhibitions and promotes traditional crafts and artisan activities. The local festival culture also includes the 54th edition of the Sagra di Santa Marta, which was announced for July 24 to 28, 2026, from 7:30 p.m. at the Patronato Parrocchiale in Valle San Giorgio in Baone. This edition was scheduled to feature a food stand with “bugagni,” pizzas and various grilled dishes.
