Aviano: Culture, Cycling Routes and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Aviano
Aviano can be explored through a range of travel interests: cycling routes lead from here towards Budoia and Piancavallo, while castles, churches and historic sites offer insights into different eras. When looking for accommodation, it may therefore be helpful to first decide what your trip will focus on—cycling, scenery or cultural history, for example. If you would like to consider other destinations, the page on Pordenone can also provide inspiration for your planning.
Cycling Routes and Scenery
For cyclists, two named routes differ considerably in their course. The route from Aviano to Budoia runs almost entirely along the Ciclovia FVG 3, also known as the Ciclovia Pedemontana e del Collio. The Salita del Giro d’Italia Aviano–Piancavallo (P002) follows Marco Pantani’s iconic climb in the 1998 Giro d’Italia. It starts on the outskirts of Aviano and leads to Piancavallo. The route along the Ciclovia and the Giro-associated climb can therefore be considered distinct options when planning a cycling tour. Conditions on individual routes may change.
In Piancavallo there are trails for trekking and mountain biking. The scenery also offers a point of reference for planning your trip: on sunny days, the view from the highest peaks reaches as far as the Adriatic Sea. The surrounding area is characterised by typical Dolomite scenery. The views are therefore dependent on sunny weather; the trails themselves are designated for trekking and mountain biking. If you would like to plan your stay mainly around a cycling route, you can compare the routes from Aviano to Budoia and Piancavallo; if you want to combine scenery with activity, Piancavallo also offers the trails mentioned above.
Castles, Churches and Historic Sites
Aviano Castle dates from the first half of the 10th century. Despite centuries of attacks, destruction and rebuilding, the original structure of an imposing fortification can still be recognised. In 967, Emperor Otto I of Saxony handed the castle over to the Patriarch of Aquileia. Its history and architecture come together here: the early date and the surviving original structure describe different aspects of the same site. The page on Castello d’Aviano offers a dedicated introduction to this destination.
The Church of San Gregorio in Castello d’Aviano contains frescoes dated to 1496. In one of the church’s fresco cycles, Gianfrancesco’s stylistic characteristics are particularly apparent. The frescoes’ date and the stylistic classification of the cycle provide two specific art-historical points of reference; Gianfrancesco is not identified as the creator of the cycle. For travellers interested in art history, these frescoes complement the older architectural history of the castle.
Near Cente di Marsure, the San Lorenzo fortification is clearly visible. Its double ring wall is made of roughly hewn stones laid in irregular horizontal courses. The description of the wall draws attention to its construction: two ring walls and the horizontal layering characterise the site. This offers a different way of exploring the area’s history than Aviano Castle, with the visible structure of the wall taking centre stage.
Villa Policreti also brings together architectural and landscape history. The oldest central part of the villa dates from 1565. Its grounds include a romantic park laid out in the 19th century, with an extensive lawn, the Grotto of Venus, a green clearing and a pond. Alongside the fortifications and frescoes, this historically designed parkland also forms part of Aviano’s cultural landscape. These features describe the site and its park; they do not provide information about visiting or opening conditions.
The former Giais hydroelectric power station in Aviano was built around the turn of the 20th century and is considered an important example of industrial archaeology. Its historic character differs from the medieval fortifications and the art in the churches: here, the focus is on industrial history. If you would like to include another distinct destination in your travel plans, you can also visit the page on Montereale Valcellina.
