Castelguglielmo Rovigo combines a long history with specific routes and an annual festival. When planning a stay, you can choose from a range of focuses: early history and the castle, cultural heritage, outdoor activities, or the Sagra di San Gaetano in August.

Early Local History and the Former Castle

The first reliable records of Castelguglielmo date back to the 10th century and refer to the settlement of Villa Manegii, which probably also included nearby San Bellino. It was characterised by a castle and a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, “San Nicolò”. The parish church of “S. Nicola di Bari” dates from the 11th century.

The former castle was destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries. Only its foundations remain, now covered by the buildings in the piazza. In 1483, Marin Sanudo described the complex as a ring of walls with a central tower on a raised embankment. He called the surrounding waters the Tartaro, the former name of the Canalbianco. The surviving foundations and the historical account thus represent different chapters in the castle’s history.

Villa, Relief and Cultural Traditions

Villa Paiola, also known as “Il Palazzon”, is listed under Castelguglielmo among the Venetian villas of artistic, historical, architectural and landscape interest. These features bring history and landscape into focus alongside the architecture. Another historical detail is the sandstone bas-relief “Leone di San Marco”, which can still be seen in Alberazzi, at the former border with the Duchy of Ferrara.

The Biblioteca Civica Comunale “MATTIA BORTOLONI” is also associated with cultural initiatives, gatherings, exhibitions and publications. Such cultural events help people discover and share local traditions. This focus on cultural engagement complements the history of the buildings and historical sites.

Routes and Festival Season

There are two specific routes for an active visit. A cycle and walking path connects Castelguglielmo with the river landing on the Canalbianco embankment. You can also walk a section of the old Via Napoleonica in Castelguglielmo. This gives you both a link to the river landing and a stretch of a historic route.

The Sagra di San Gaetano takes place every year around 7 August. At the festival, volunteers serve traditional dishes and local specialities. Unlike a stay focused on historical buildings, a trip centred on the Sagra can be planned around this recurring date. The August festival is therefore a specific date to consider if you want to include the event and local cuisine in your plans.

Travel Interests and Finding Accommodation

When looking for accommodation, you can start by deciding what matters most for your trip: the Sagra is an annual highlight in August; history and culture offer another focus, while the cycle and walking path and the Via Napoleonica add an active dimension.
