Duino-Aurisina: Quarries, Karst Trails and Views
Accommodation in Duino-Aurisina
Duino-Aurisina can be discovered through its trails, quarries and the history of Aurisina stone. Rather than a uniform sightseeing programme, this offers you a selection of clearly distinct experiences: the KAMEN Museo Diffuso focuses on the historical, cultural and geological heritage of Aurisina, while several trails lead through the quarry district, along the Karst escarpment or without any incline to special landscape and local points of interest.
Stone, History and Geology
The KAMEN Museo Diffuso presents the historical, cultural and geological heritage of Aurisina. The focus is on the quarries and Aurisina stone. A suitable complement to this is the historic Aurisina stone quarrying area, which has been classified as a geosite by the regional geological service. The combination of the museum and the former quarrying area makes the stone visible not only as a material, but also as part of the area's history and geology.
Trails through the Quarry District
Via della Pietra No. 1 starts and ends at Piazzale del Municipio di Aurisina. The trail crosses the quarry district of the Museo Diffuso delle Cave e della Pietra di Aurisina, thereby placing the individual impressions within a circular route. If you would like to explore the quarry itself on a guided tour, the tour of Cava Romana di Aurisina starts and ends in the forecourt in front of the quarry, at the Bivio Aurisina station. This tour therefore has a clearly defined start and end point and differs in format from a freely described walking route.
Karst Escarpment and Views
The Tiziana Weiss Trail follows the Karst escarpment from Santa Croce to Aurisina. It is approximately 2.5 km long and easy to walk. In clear conditions, the trail offers views of the Grado Lagoon, the Gulf of Trieste, Punta Salvore and the Friulian mountains. Both its route along the Karst escarpment and the viewing conditions are therefore important when assessing the trail: the views mentioned are explicitly dependent on clear conditions.
An Easy Walk and the Trail to the Sea
Via della Pietra No. 3 is an easy walk at a tourist level with no incline. Alongside the approximately 2.5 km-long Tiziana Weiss Trail, this provides another option with different characteristics. The historical connection of this trail eventually reaches the sea at Canovella degli Zoppoli: fishermen used it to descend there and fish with their “zoppole” or “čupa”. In its traditional use, the trail therefore connects the quarry area with a descent to the sea, without this implying any present-day statement about operations or access.
Further Local Destinations for Orientation
For your further selection of local destinations, you can also include Sistiana and Ternova Piccola. Further destinations at the same broader level are Samatorza, Longera, Sgonico, Repen, Villaggio del Pescatore and San Dorligo Della Valle.
