Historical traces in Savorgnano Del Torre

Castello della Motta was built no later than the end of the 7th century AD as a strategic fortress for controlling the course of the Torre. The site therefore represents an early, clearly military phase in the history of the area. Today, ruins of the fortress remain. Its location and surviving traces make the Castello a destination for anyone who would like to combine historic sites with a sense of the landscape.

Villa Savorgnan represents a different era. It was built in the 15th or 16th century by the Savorgnan della Bandiera family. The fortified villa served as the administrative seat of a powerful fief whose jurisdiction extended over the waters of the Roggia Cividina. The complex also includes a noble chapel dedicated to the Santissima Annunziata. The site is therefore noteworthy not only as a structure, but also for its former administrative function and its religious counterpart.

The present-day parish church of Savorgnano also helps provide a sense of the area’s history. The foundation stone of the new Church of San Michele was laid on January 19, 1905; it was solemnly consecrated on December 20, 1910. The present-day parish church preserves important works by the local painter Luigi Martinis. In the village, you will therefore encounter both older architecture associated with authority and fortifications and ecclesiastical heritage from the 20th century.

Forest, ridge, and Parco del Torre

The ruins of Castello della Motta lie in dense woodland on the summit of the southwestern end of a ridge, near the confluence of two waterways. The site can be reached on foot, although with some difficulty. For your visit, this means there is a clear distinction between the more difficult-to-reach Castello and the separately described park: reaching the Castello involves a footpath and a certain degree of physical exertion.

Parco del Torre di Savorgnano is located on the embankment of the Torrente Torre near a bridge. From there, you can enjoy views of forests and vineyards in the surrounding hills. The park also includes a multifunctional venue for events. Alongside the ruins and villas, this provides a landscape-focused place where the surroundings of the watercourse, embankment, forest, and vineyards can be seen.

Walks and regional specialties

The Marcia Verde is an approximately ten-kilometre, non-competitive hike through the hills, forests, and roads of Savorgnano. It presents the landscape not from the perspective of a single viewpoint, but as a longer route through various parts of the area. The Magnalonga offers another way to get to know Savorgnano: this culinary walk passes through meadows and hills and includes tasting stations featuring Friulian products and wines from producers in Savorgnano.
