Discover Strassoldo: Gardens, Churches and History
Accommodation in Strassoldo
Strassoldo brings together historic residences, carefully preserved gardens and significant churches within a compact area rich in heritage. If you are looking for a place with a strong historical and landscape character for your trip, you will encounter different forms of garden design, medieval architecture and sacred art here. Each of the castles and churches has its own distinctive focus.
Water, Trees and Garden Design
Castello di Strassoldo di Sopra is one of the oldest residences in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Its centuries-old park is bordered by spring-fed streams and is recognizable as a late Baroque garden by a large orangery with elaborately carved, preserved columns. A particularly striking feature is the ancient Magnolia grandiflora, considered the park’s most imposing tree. This part of Strassoldo thus combines the representative architecture of an orangery with the character of a mature historic park.
At Castello di Sotto, water is the dominant design element. Fountains, fountain features, ponds and fishponds reflect 18th-century statues as well as some rare plant species. At the edge of the park lies a rectangular island surrounded by a moat. It once housed a miniature Italian garden; this former use is part of the site’s historical development and does not describe its present-day function. Castello di Sotto’s park is also notable for its exemplary state of preservation and its early role in the spread of landscape gardening in the region.
Medieval Lanes and Significant Frescoes
Porta Cistigna leads into a cobbled lane. Along it stand an old medieval wall and stone buildings from the same period. Unlike the grounds shaped by water and garden design, this section is defined by the gate, lane, wall and stone buildings from the same era.
The churches, too, preserve different historical layers. The Church of Santa Maria in Vineis contains exceptionally well-preserved 14th-century frescoes by Tommaso da Modena and Masolino da Panicale. The Chapel of San Marco was probably created in 1575 by adapting a fortified tower. At San Nicolò, the present structure dates from the 18th century, while a chapel dedicated to the saint is documented as early as the 14th century. The church also contains an altar made of white Istrian stone, painted in the 15th century by Bernardino da Bissone.
Strassoldo as the Starting Point of a Cycling Circuit
Another perspective on the surrounding area is offered by the cycling circuit “Verso i parchi e i giardini dei castelli di Strassoldo e di Villa Iachia”. It starts and ends at Cervignano railway station. For your travel planning, this identifies at least the route’s designated starting and ending point; the name also refers to the parks and gardens of the castles of Strassoldo and Villa Iachia.
