Portegrandi connects the Sile River with the Venetian Lagoon and offers several clearly distinct ways to experience the landscape, waterways and natural history. The lock is a defining feature, separating the river from the lagoon. In addition, there is the connection to the Litoranea Veneta, access from the Porto Turistico di Portegrandi towards the lagoon and islands, and the Centro di Educazione ambientale Airone di Portegrandi.

Lock, Sile and Lagoon

The Conca di Portegrandi was built around 1680 as part of the diversion of the final section of the Sile. A lock dating from the 17th century separates the Sile River from the Venetian Lagoon at Portegrandi. This structural connection makes the town a place where the river environment and the lagoon landscape can be experienced directly through a historic water-management facility.

The navigable Litoranea Veneta waterway also begins, among other places, at the lock of Portegrandi. From there, it runs eastwards to the lock of Bevazzana in San Michele al Tagliamento. For visitors who wish to understand the waterways and the different landscapes of Veneto, Portegrandi is therefore not just a single viewpoint, but also a designated starting point of a longer navigable connection.

Trips to the Lagoon and the Islands

From the Porto Turistico di Portegrandi, you can travel towards the Venetian Lagoon and reach the islands. This option complements the historic significance of the lock with a concrete perspective on the lagoon and its islands. The town can therefore be viewed both through the water-management history of the Sile and through a journey towards the Venetian Lagoon.

Centro Airone: Habitats and Bird Species

The Centro di Educazione ambientale Airone di Portegrandi has an educational room and a large exhibition room. The educational room presents the river environment of the Sile and the lagoon environment of the Venetian Lagoon; the large exhibition room features specimens of the fauna found in the area, including birds and reptiles.

Additional information panels cover the local habitats as well as the breeding, care, protection and conservation of local, migratory and exotic bird species. A visit therefore focuses not only on individual animals, but also on the different habitats and on the management of bird species from different origins. The Centro Airone’s visitor program also includes an additional 30-minute visit to the Conca di Portegrandi.

Use of the Centro di Educazione ambientale Airone di Portegrandi is available by prior reservation. This information is relevant when planning a visit that combines the exhibition rooms with the additional visit to the Conca.

Getting There and Finding Your Way Around

The Portegrandi bus stop is just a few minutes’ walk from the center. It is served by the ATVO 25A and MOM 108 intercity bus routes. The center of Portegrandi is at street level and free of architectural barriers. The town’s main orientation points are therefore clearly identified: the bus stop near the center, the lock at the transition between the Sile and the lagoon, the Porto Turistico and the natural-history Centro Airone.
