Gruaro between mills and churches

Those who want to discover Gruaro through its history will find a particularly vivid starting point on the Lemene: the Mulini di Stalis are a medieval mill complex with two mills on the Lemene River. The complex is located immediately after entering the municipal area of Gruaro. Two clearly distinct historical layers can be identified here. The older mill was first mentioned in documents in 1432, while the younger mill dates from the late 19th century.

The Chiesa di San Giusto also combines a long documented history with a building that is visible today. It has been mentioned in documents since 1186 or 1187. The present church was built between 1482 and 1513 on the remains of an earlier church. The Chiesa di San Tommaso offers another art-historical highlight: its walls, apse and the round arch between the nave and the choir are decorated with fresco cycles from the Friulian-Venetian school dating from the late 15th century to the first half of the 16th century.

Historical evidence along the way

The cultural picture also includes the Sarcofago Romano near Bagnara. The Roman sarcophagus was discovered in 1981 and is dated to Late Antiquity, the 4th or 5th century. It can currently be viewed outside the primary school. The visit is therefore tied to a specific location and to the current information regarding accessibility.

On foot or by bicycle along the Lemene

Gruaro can be explored not only through individual buildings, but also via paths along the water. The activity “Passeggiata lungo il Lemene tra acque placide e antichi mulini” begins in Gruaro and follows a flat route of approximately 6.5 kilometres. It runs along the Lemene, presents the history of the Boldara Mill and reveals the natural features of this area. It is led by an environmental hiking guide authorised under Regional Law L.R. E.R. No. 4/2000 and subsequent amendments.

For a longer connection, there is the GiraLemene cycling and walking route. It begins in the municipal area of Gruaro at the Boldara footbridge and leads to the Mulini di Stalis. The route is 38 kilometres long and has literary connections to Nievo, Pasolini, Russolo and Hemingway. This allows you to distinguish between a flat hiking activity of approximately 6.5 kilometres and a 38-kilometre cycling and walking route without equating the two offerings.

A recurring event in Stalis

Since 2001, the event “Stalis tra arte, storia e natura” has been held every year on the first Sunday in June. It is organised by the municipalities of Cordovado, Gruaro and Sesto al Reghena. The date thus explicitly combines art, history and nature in its name and expands the individual sights into a shared event format.
