Latisana on the Tagliamento
Latisana can be explored through the Tagliamento River, historic traces of the town and a clearly defined cultural landscape. The river shaped the location of the town; in the past, it was a preferred route for transport and trade. For travel by car, the Latisana exit on the A4 Venezia–Trieste motorway is a specific point of reference. This does not establish distances or travel times, but the access route is clearly identified.
The town’s more recent history is also reflected in its appearance. The bell tower of the Church of San Giovanni Battista, which is now 63 metres high, was rebuilt in 1920. At Piazza Indipendenza, buildings with Venetian features and round arches on the ground floor recall the architectural development of Latisana. During the renewal of the square’s paving, the remains of the demolished Church of Santa Croce were also uncovered in 2000.
Churches, art and historic names
The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista houses an altarpiece by Paolo Caliari, known as “Il Veronese”. The work depicts the Baptism of Christ and dates from 1567. The Church of Sant’Antonio da Padova contains two other named works of art: the altarpiece “Sant’Anna, Madonna col Bambino, Triade Agostiniana e Donatore”, attributed to Jacopo and Domenico Tintoretto and dating from the late 16th century, and the main altarpiece “Sacra Famiglia, Sant’Antonio di Padova e Santa Chiara d’Assisi”, painted by Mattia Bortoloni in the early 18th century.
From the 17th to the 18th century, Latisana had seven consecrated churches. This historic number earned the city the nickname “City of the Septifanium”. Another distinctive local history is associated with the Church of Beata Vergine delle Grazie on the Tagliamento. It was probably built around the middle of the 16th century at a secondary landing stage of Latisana’s river port, was previously called “Madonna della Sabionara” and received its current name at the beginning of the 19th century. The chronological classifications and the word “probably” are part of the traditional description of this church.
Odeon, arena and river access
The Cinema Teatro Odeon at Via Vendramin 72 complements the historic sights with a cultural offering of films, theatre performances and events for all age groups. The building was established in 1920 under the name Teatro LEGA. The name was derived from the initial letters of the owners at the time.
The arena in Gaspari Town Park was renovated on 30 May 2026. It received tiered seating and a new circular stage equipped for modern and versatile use. At Parco Gaspari, canoes can be launched into the Tagliamento River via a small ramp. This means that both a cultural and a river-related aspect of Latisana are highlighted at another location.
Wine and specific visiting times
The local character also includes Albafiorita Winery. It cultivates eight hectares according to organic farming principles and offers three different wine-tasting itineraries. These are accompanied by a selection of typical products. If you plan a tasting, the specific time is important: tastings are held daily from 6:00 p.m. by prior reservation via WhatsApp.
