Mirano
Accommodation in Mirano
Mirano combines art in its historic centre, extensive villa parks, markets and traces of its former water and milling economy. If you would like to choose your accommodation in Veneto based on specific local features, Mirano offers several different points of interest: architectural history at the Duomo di San Michele Arcangelo, parkland along the Muson, regular markets and the two named cycle routes.
Art and Architectural History in the Centre
The Duomo di San Michele Arcangelo dates from the 16th century and was remodelled in 1684. Inside, the cathedral preserves a ceiling fresco by Giovanni De Min entitled “Giudizio universale”. It also houses Giambattista Tiepolo’s altarpiece “Miracolo di Sant'Antonio che riattacca il piede”. This means that a single building contains two clearly identified works of art by different artists, complemented by the cathedral’s documented architectural history.
Another historical focus is Molini di Sotto. The disused industrial complex is located in the historic centre and faces the boat harbour basin in front of it. Until the 1960s, Molini di Sotto operated as a grain mill and oil mill. The basin was enlarged and dredged so that Burci boats could dock and manoeuvre. The Taglio Canal was dug in 1606 to connect the Muson with the Riviera del Brenta. These places make the former importance of mills, basins and canals visible as an independent theme in the town’s history.
Villas, Parks and Landscape Structure
The public parks of Villa Belvedere and Villa Morosini–XXV Aprile are located in Mirano’s historic centre, follow the course of the Muson River and cover a total of five hectares.
Villa Morosini, Monico detta XXV Aprile was built around the middle of the 17th century and completed in 1661. Its park extends over more than three hectares and contains numerous statues with courtly themes from the 19th century. The historic spatial structure of the surrounding area is also noteworthy: the Roman Graticolato remains clearly recognisable in Mirano. Straight roads intersect at right angles, while the agricultural land is regularly divided. Thus, alongside individual buildings, the inherited arrangement of roads and fields also emerges as a distinct landscape feature.
Festivals, Markets and Cycle Routes
The Fiera di San Matteo is one of the recurring events in Mirano. Its first edition was authorised on 6 September 1477 by a decree of the Venetian Senate. The Fiera di San Matteo takes place on the third weekend of September and offers traditional entertainment with fairground rides and travelling shows, as well as a market selling a variety of goods.
For the regular weekly schedule, the farmers’ market held on Fridays in Piazza Martiri della Libertà is relevant. On the same piazza, a market for antiques and second-hand goods organised by the municipality and Confcommercio del Miranese takes place on the third Sunday of every month, except in July and August. Depending on the purpose of your trip, you can therefore categorise Mirano through its historic art, villas and parks, or through its market and festival dates.
As part of the MIBI programme, Mirano offers the “TOUR DELLE FRAZIONI” cycle route and the “TRA VILLLE E CAMPAGNA” route.
