Cavalo is a destination for travelers who want to combine a hiking route with historic local landmarks. Highlights include the route from Cavalo to Monte Pastello, the Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo, and the I lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane. Together, these places offer different ways to experience the landscape, local history, and orientation.

Hiking from Cavalo to Monte Pastello

The Da Cavalo al Monte Pastello hiking trail begins at the parish church of Cavalo. From there, it leads uphill through the historic town center in a westerly direction to Contrada Piazzi and then continues to a viewpoint. The starting point thus connects the town itself with a route whose course is already easy to follow from the first section.

The trail does not end at Contrada Piazzi: it continues along CAI Trail 238 to the summit of Monte Pastello at an altitude of 1,112 meters. A two-meter-high stone cross stands there. The elevation information for the entire route is also important for your choice: the hiking trail from Cavalo to Monte Pastello climbs approximately 570 meters in elevation.

The route is considered the most challenging trail in the series and is suitable for people with good physical fitness. It therefore differs significantly from a short walk through the town center. Anyone wishing to combine Cavalo with Monte Pastello should take into account the physical demands described, as well as the transition from the uphill path through the town to the onward route along CAI Trail 238.

Chiesa Vecchia and Ancient Traces

The Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo is a 15th-century building. It was constructed over an older Romanesque church, traces of which have been preserved. The church also contains a Roman altar dedicated to the goddess Lualda. Lualda was a deity of the ancient Arusnates. Those interested in the historical layers of the town will therefore find both medieval and older Roman references here.

The location of the Chiesa Vecchia is also characteristic in terms of orientation: it stands outside the built-up area on the road toward Monte di Sant'Ambrogio di Valpolicella. The building is therefore not within the compact settlement area, but on a clearly designated road outside the built-up area. This location complements the historic town center, where the route to Monte Pastello begins.

I lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane

Another distinctive local landmark is the I lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane. This is an imposing fountain, almost 10 meters long, with a public washhouse. The facility served as a collection point for drinking water and, at the same time, as a public washhouse. Its former function is therefore directly connected with the town's water supply and daily life.

The I lavatoi di Cavalo di Fumane have always been an important point of reference in the town. In addition to their size and historic use, this function is therefore also part of how the town is perceived. Together with the Chiesa Vecchia and the hiking trail, they create an impression of Cavalo that is not limited to a single experience: here, you can take in a historic town center, a building located outside the town, a distinctive facility, and a challenging mountain route.
