Fumane – Archaeology, Trails and Wine
Accommodation in Fumane
Fumane combines one of Europe’s most significant known prehistoric archaeological sites with wine landscapes, walking trails, religious buildings and regional tastings. If you would like to choose your stay based on specific experiences, you will find both cultural and historical attractions and trails through the landscape, as well as culinary offerings here.
Archaeology and the Lessinia Landscape
The Grotta di Fumane opens at an elevation of 350 metres in the Parco Naturale Regionale della Lessinia. Its significance lies in its documented prehistoric history: it is considered one of Europe’s most significant known archaeological sites. This gives it a clear cultural focus among the local attractions.
Another landscape area is the Valle dei Progni near Fumane, which is known for its abundance of water and numerous waterways. The combination of the valley and waterways complements the higher-altitude cave with another aspect of the destination shaped by nature.
Walking Trails and Viewpoints
The Fumane Panoramica e Monte Sant’Urbano route begins in the centre of Fumane. It follows a path lined with vineyards to a viewpoint overlooking the valley and the Fumane plain. The Fumane Storica route, by contrast, is described as an easy walk and passes the medieval church of San Micheletto.
The Santuario della Madonna de La Salette also combines culture and landscape. The religious building dates from 1864, is situated in a wooded setting and offers panoramic views of the vineyards around Fumane. The footpath there begins at Fumane’s town hall square.
For trails with a different focus, the Parco delle Cascate di Molina offers several signposted paths with rest areas. The park can be reached in a few minutes on foot from the medieval village of Molina di Fumane. The historic Molin de Lorenso mill in Molina di Fumane also preserves its external mill wheel.
Wine, Olive Oil and Regional Tastings
At Cavarena in Mazzurega, Fumane, you can book visits as well as wine and olive oil tastings by reservation. The gourmet tasting there combines four wines with matching culinary accompaniments. The olive oil tasting is served with crostini made from artisan bread, black olives and local cheese.
Scriani in Fumane offers another perspective on wine with a tasting of six typical Valpolicella wines. The offerings mentioned therefore differ both in terms of the product and the form of the culinary accompaniment.
Historic Buildings in the Wider Area
The cultural selection includes the Chiesa Vecchia di Cavalo, an old church of Romanesque origin elsewhere in the municipality of Fumane. Villa della Torre is a distinctive 16th-century villa amid the valuable vineyards of Valpolicella. These buildings complement the cave, churches and trails with additional historical points of interest.
If you would like to extend your search to other places in the same broader selection, you can also consider Zevio, Festara, Parona Di Valpolicella, Pescantina, Vigasio, Caldiero, Braga and Colà.
