Pastrengo between Lake Garda and the Adige
Accommodation in Pastrengo
Pastrengo combines the landscape of Lake Garda with an unusually rich historical setting. The town lies in the hilly terrain of the moraine amphitheatre around Lake Garda, between the lake and the Adige. Vineyards, olive groves, orchards, and individual oak and hornbeam woods shape the landscape. Military forts and several medieval villas rise on the hills lined with cypress trees; from there, expansive views open up over Lake Garda and the Adige plain.
Landscape and Historic Sites
The history of Pastrengo is closely linked to the Carica di Pastrengo. It took place on 30 April 1848, when three squadrons of mounted Carabinieri attacked the Austrian outposts. The Fortino Belvedere, inaugurated on 30 April 2009, commemorates this cavalry attack. Fortino Belvedere overlooks the sites of the 1848 attack. Inside, illustrated panels along the balcony explain the various phases of the battle.
Another historical landmark is the Optical Telegraph. It was equipped with a “Chiappe” optical mechanism and sent coded alphanumeric messages by means of light signals to the Castelvecchio station in Verona and to the Cima Telegrafo transmitter on Monte Baldo. The Optical Telegraph is located in Pastrengo between Forts Nugent and Leopold. This makes it possible to trace military history and early communications at authentic locations, without the landscape serving merely as a backdrop.
Paths through the Moraine Landscape
For exploring on foot or by bicycle, local route 2 offers a clearly described course. It runs from the square in Pastrengo via the viewpoint at the sites of the attack, Carlo Alberto’s rustic house, the Forte Leopold barracks, and the Optical Telegraph to Fort Nugent. The gently rising hills of Pastrengo’s moraine amphitheatre and the Pol plain are also crossed by a dense network of easy paths.
Pastrengo is a suitable starting point for cycling tours along the nearby cycle path. Parco Natura Viva, a safari park with a drive-through route and protected wildlife, is also located in the immediate vicinity. Those wishing to include an older religious building alongside the fortifications will find the Romanesque church of San Zeno nearby, dating back to 1051.
Special Dates and Regional Impressions
On 30 April, Pastrengo commemorates the anniversary of the 1848 Carica dei Carabinieri a Cavallo. The Pumpkin Festival provides a different focus: during the first ten days of September, typical farm dishes with pumpkin flavours are offered by the Pro Loco’s street kitchen in the park at the Piovezzano roundabout. In this way, historical remembrance, paths through the hilly landscape, and a regionally distinctive event stand side by side.
Fortino Belvedere is located at Strada Provinciale 5a, 1, 37010 Pastrengo. For further destination options, you can also discover Cariano, Fornello, Peschiera Del Garda, Calmasino, Cerea, Ceraino, Ronchi and Braga.
