Valgatara amid architectural heritage, wine and trails

Valgatara combines architectural history, a trail along the ridge and a regional food and wine culture.

Churches, villas and historic traces

Among the notable cultural landmarks is San Marco al Pozzo, a Romanesque church with a simple gabled façade and a small bell tower. Inside, San Marco al Pozzo has frescoes dating from the late 14th to the early 15th century. The parish church of Valgatara is dedicated to Saints Fermo and Rustico and has medieval origins. In 1854, it was expanded according to a design by the architect Francesco Ronzani. This means that medieval beginnings and a clearly dated 19th-century architectural extension stand side by side in one place.

The villas also add their own architectural accents. Villa Campagnola is a large building with a loggia resting on architraves and a portico with round-arched, rusticated pillars. Villa Guantieri in the hamlet of Fasanara near Valgatara is considered a well-preserved example of a villa with a portico and loggia, as well as a dovecote tower. The La Torre complex includes a truncated dovecote tower and visible remains of a three-bay farm wing with pillars and rusticated arches.

An agreement from 1506 is also revealing for the historical classification of Valgatara. It mentions Valgatara as a community that was presumably organised in a “vicinia” and led by a “massaro”. The cautious wording “presumably” is part of the statement handed down and does not describe a confirmed organisational structure.

Trail No. 235

The landscape perspective of Valgatara is particularly defined by Trail No. 235. It runs along the ridge between Valgatara and the Negrar valley and offers panoramic views of the villages of Valpolicella. For your planning, this means that not only a trail name but also a specific route is documented: the path connects the location on the ridge with views of the surrounding villages. No information on the length or walking time of this trail is available; such values should therefore not be assumed.

“4 Passi di Gusto” and regional specialities

Another facet is provided by “4 Passi di Gusto”. The Pro Loco Marano di Valpolicella has been organising this series for 20 years. At the 2023 edition, the Easter “Brassadela” and a glass of Recioto Classico were offered for tasting at Corte Nicolis in Valgatara. The accompanying “4 Passi di Gusto” walk led through vineyards and among cherry and olive trees. Thus, in addition to its architectural heritage, Valgatara also has a documented, specific connection between the route, cultivated areas and regional products. The 2023 edition is a past event date and says nothing about a future date.

Further destinations include Sant'ambrogio Di Valpolicella, Palù Dei Mori, San Giovanni Lupatoto, Ferrara Di Monte Baldo, Custoza, Brenzone, Braga and Illasi.
