Cassola between Local History and Regional Experiences

If you would like to place Cassola in its cultural context, important traces lead to the churches of San Marco and San Zeno, traditional events and cycling routes in the Bassano del Grappa area. The town thus combines historic architectural heritage, regional festivals and a described selection of routes for cyclists.

Traditional Festivals in San Giuseppe and San Zeno

The Festa dei Fiori in San Giuseppe di Cassola is a traditional market event for horticulture and the care of green spaces. Its traditional date is the Sunday before 19 March. For 2025, it is also recorded that the event had already been held there for 39 years. It is therefore one of the recurring topics through which the local events calendar can be explored.

San Zeno, Cassola, is also associated with an event centred on regional products: the Festa dell'asparago is dedicated to white asparagus. For your travel planning, this provides a distinct cultural highlight that differs from the town's ecclesiastical history themes.

From the Deed of Donation to the Church of San Marco

The first written mention of Cassola is a deed of donation issued on 29 April 1085. It mentions a castle and a chapel. Following this donation, a watchtower-like structure resembling a castle was built in the countryside of Cassola. Inside it was a chapel dedicated to Saint Mark the Evangelist.

The present-day Church of San Marco was built from the ground up between 1746 and 1766. Inside, there is Jacopo dal Ponte's altarpiece depicting Saint Mark in glory between Saints John the Evangelist and Bartholomew. The work was installed there on 21 December 1573. The classically designed façade also conveys historical information: its central entrance portal is accompanied by an inscription recording the chronology of its construction.

San Zeno: Construction Phases, Frescoes and Preserved Structure

The documented history of the Church of San Zeno also reaches far back. A rector is documented in a record dated 1 October 1427. The first construction phase of the present-day church began on 6 February 1746; it was consecrated on 29 June 1847. Its neoclassical façade is characterised by four pilasters with Corinthian capitals.

Inside, the nave vault is decorated with frescoes depicting the glory of Saint Zeno and the Assumption of Mary. The church underwent extensive restoration from 2014 to 2017 after numerous cracks had been found in the vault. The existing decorations were also restored during this work. The sacristy belonged to the original small church; it was to be preserved as evidence of the original wall structure.

Explore Cassola by Bike

They are mostly paved and can be ridden without major difficulties.
