Castelgomberto combines experiences in nature with several layers of local history. The townscape includes a hiking route, archaeological evidence, historic villas and a long-standing event. Colle di S. Stefano, Monte Castello and the villas represent different historical periods.

Trails and landscapes around Castelgomberto

The Camminata di Primavera is a 12.5-kilometre route. The ascent is listed as 420 metres of elevation gain, and the estimated duration is 3 hours and 45 minutes. Alongside this route is the Giro Poscole-Praderia loop trail. It passes through the Poscole area, which is known for its springs. The Camminata is laid out as a route, while the Giro Poscole-Praderia is a loop trail.

Archaeological Evidence and the Castle of Chiuse

The archaeological finds date back over several centuries. Excavations on Colle di S. Stefano have documented a settlement from the Middle to Late Bronze Age, dated to the 15th to 12th centuries BC. On Monte Castello, archaeological excavations documented a settlement from the Early Iron Age dating from the 9th century BC. Colle di S. Stefano thus represents a Middle to Late Bronze Age settlement, while Monte Castello is associated with an Early Iron Age settlement.

The Castle of Chiuse has been documented since around the year 1000 and is associated with imposing wall remains and several structural elements on Monte Castello. Archaeological settlement traces and the remains of the Castle of Chiuse therefore meet on Monte Castello.

Villas, Parks and Historic Architectural Forms

Villa da Schio was completed in 1666 as Villa Piovene. It includes an 18th-century park with broad avenues of centuries-old trees and extensive green spaces. The chapel of Santa Maria Maddalena in Villa da Schio dates from 1296 and adds a significantly older architectural element to the complex. The park and chapel therefore point to different periods of origin within Villa da Schio.

The Palazzo Barbaran and Villa Trissino provide further historical highlights. The Palazzo Barbaran is the former Villa dei Trissino, a representative private building constructed around the mid-15th century in Gothic forms. Villa Trissino in Castelgomberto, by contrast, is a Neoclassical aristocratic villa. Gothic forms and Neoclassicism mark different stylistic periods in these two buildings.

Fiera di Santa Maria Maddalena

The local event history includes the Fiera di Santa Maria Maddalena, first held in 1796 and long known as “la fiera del pao”. In the evenings, the event offers food stalls, music and entertainment. Tripe is its traditional signature dish. The Fiera thus combines an evening programme with a long-established culinary focus.
