Longare between architectural heritage and rocky landscapes

If, in addition to the well-known cities, you would like to explore Veneto through its architectural heritage, distinctive rocky landscapes and local features, Longare offers several unique points of interest. Its historical evidence ranges from religious foundations and villa architecture to caves that served different purposes over long periods. There is also a documented climbing area, a trail in Costozza and a local product whose early production is connected with the surrounding rocks.

Historic places with different stories

The Eremo di San Cassiano is a 17th-century building incorporating a church that is about a thousand years older. Graves carved into the rock can still be seen there today. For your visit, the form of access is crucial: the Eremo can only be reached on foot via a path that runs along the cliffs of Lumignano.

Villa Eolia was built in the second half of the 16th century by Count Francesco Trento as a pavilion and headquarters of the Accademia Eolica. Palladio described the villa in 1570 in the second book of the “Quattro libri dell’architettura”. A distinctive architectural detail is the precious openwork octagonal stone grille. Through it, tempered air from the mountain caves can rise via underground passages.

The Benedictine parish church of Pieve di San Mauro Abate stands on a rocky spur. It is one of the oldest religious foundations in the Vicenza area and adds another religious reference to Longare’s historical profile.

Caves, quarries and trails

Behind Lumignano lie the Covoli dei Berici, natural caves in the limestone cliffs. The rock openings were used from the Upper and Middle Paleolithic through to the second half of the 20th century. Their functions changed considerably over time: they served as settlements, fortified refuges, hermitages and shelters for domestic animals.

The area of the former Ex Cava Volto di Costozza quarry is also one of the locality’s landscape-related highlights. Today it hosts events and guided visits. At the same time, the site serves as an experimental project for restoring natural habitats and enhancing them for educational and ecological purposes.

The Sentiero del Monte Brosimo is clearly described as a trail connection in Costozza: it begins and ends at Piazza da Schio. This makes it possible to identify the starting point of the trail precisely with a square in the town, without presupposing any further details about the route or walking time.

Climbing in Lumignano and important restrictions

The climbing cliffs of Lumignano were already being used by mountaineers in 1920 to prepare for ascents in the Dolomites. Today they are considered an international reference for sport climbing. There are 30 new routes for adults and 15 for children.

At the same time, specific restrictions apply at Dente di Lumignano: climbing is prohibited on 21 routes on the south side and on 32 routes on the west side. The affected area lies to the left of the “CLASSICA”. This information is therefore just as important for orientation on the rock as the designated routes.

Bisi di Lumignano

Since 2008, the municipality of Longare has recognised “Bisi di Lumignano” under its DECO regulation as a typical local product. In the case of these peas, the heat stored by the surrounding rocks enables exceptionally early production. Thus, alongside its historical and sporting associations, the landscape of Lumignano also has a clearly identified culinary speciality.
