Discover Feltre between urban history and nature

Feltre combines prominent evidence of its history with museums, historic buildings and trails through diverse landscapes. If you would like to get to know a place through more than a single landmark, the town offers several distinct points of access: The Palio di Feltre commemorates the town of Feltre joining the Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia on 15 June 1404. The Palio takes place over the three days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the first weekend in August.

Historic Sites and Museums

The Museo Civico archeologico houses a collection in the 16th-century Palazzo Villabruna. The Roman remains in the state archaeological area of Feltre provide a different focus on the history of the period. There, along a paved street, are rooms interpreted as shops. There is also a large building understood to have been the representative seat of one or more professional associations. The archaeological findings therefore reveal not only individual objects, but also different uses within the Roman town. Feltre Cathedral preserves an 11th-century crypt and a Gothic apse that survived the destruction of 1510. The Teatro de La Sena is located on the first floor of the Palazzo della Ragione. The 16th-century palace is characterised by large Palladian arcades on Piazza Maggiore. Also connected with the town's history is the Torre dell’Orologio: it was the historic entrance to the Castello di Feltre and contains a virtual reconstruction of the changes to the castle and Piazza Maggiore. The Torre del Campanon rises approximately 34 metres on the Colle delle Capre. Its construction history includes a late Romanesque and a late medieval phase. The Antiche prigioni in the Palazzo Pretorio provide a particularly direct insight into the history of its more recent use. Heavy prison doors fitted with ironwork, viewing windows and double bolts, cell numbering, inscriptions and graffiti have been preserved there. The rooms were used as a prison until 1965. Carlo Goldoni is also part of Feltre's documented history: he came to Feltre in 1729 as an assistant in the criminal chancery and wrote his first plays there.

Trails through waterways and cultural heritage

The Anello del Rio Musil circular trail combines movement and landscape. It follows the waterways around Feltre and Pedavena for approximately 5 kilometres and can be explored on foot or by bicycle from the centre of Feltre. The Vincheto di Celarda, established in 1971, offers a different perspective on the landscape. The area covers 92 hectares of wetlands with standing and flowing waters, riparian forests, meadows and scrubland. The Percorso urbano dei „conventi perduti“ runs partly through Feltre and partly through the natural areas on Monte Telva and Monte Miesna. Its final stop is the 11th-century sanctuary on Monte Miesna, dedicated to the holy martyrs Vittore and Corona. The Anello delle Ville di Cart-Vellai circular trail offers the opportunity to discover numerous Venetian villas in a green natural landscape. Alongside the town's buildings, there are therefore also trails that connect traces of history with outdoor spaces. Another cultural focus is the collection of the Galleria d’arte moderna Carlo Rizzarda. It includes paintings, sculptures, decorative art objects, furniture and works of art from Carlo Rizzarda's Milanese residential surroundings. Depending on your interests, Feltre therefore allows you to combine archaeological evidence, religious and urban history, theatre, art collections, as well as trails along waterways and through natural areas.
