Livinallongo Del Col Di Lana combines a striking mountain setting with Ladin culture and memorial sites from the First World War. An important point of reference is Arabba: the village district lies at an altitude of 1,602 metres at the foot of the Sella Group and the Passo Campolongo and Passo Pordoi. A stay in this region therefore means being surrounded by high-alpine landscapes, mountain passes and excursion destinations shaped by history.

Mountains, passes and activities around Arabba

The mountains around Arabba offer hiking trails through forests and meadows, crossing streams and leading to mountain peaks. In the hiking area, if you respect their habitat, you may observe marmots, hares and deer. A particularly notable historical route is the Pieve di Livinallongo–Col di Lana–Monte Sief trail. It passes near the entrance to the Italian mine tunnels used to blow up the summit of Col di Lana on the night of 17–18 April 1916. The route also reaches a chapel overlooking Col di Lana and offering a 360-degree panoramic view of the Dolomites.

For a more demanding mountain excursion, the Ferrata delle Trincee runs from Porta Vescovo to Passo Padon. Cycling is also well represented, with a variety of routes. Arabba offers mountain bike routes of varying difficulty, including single trails and the Sellaronda MTB Tour, which starts in the village. Road cycling routes lead from Arabba over Passo Pordoi, Passo Campolongo, Passo Falzarego, Passo Gardena, Passo Fedaia and Passo Giau. In winter, the Arabba–Marmolada ski area is part of Dolomiti Superski; Arabba is also one of the starting points for the Sellaronda ski circuit.

Ladin culture and history

The cultural side of the municipality is particularly evident in Pieve. The Museo di storia, usi, costumi della gente ladina was founded to preserve and present the ancient Ladin culture in all its facets. The Museo Ladino Fodom covers the history of the valley, from the earliest archaeological finds to the major events of modern times, including the First and Second World Wars. At the same time, it documents the local environment through its flora, fauna and geology.

Pieve is also home to the Chiesa parrocchiale di San Giacomo Maggiore, which dates back to the 15th century. The Museo storico Col di Lana “Carlo Ragnes” displays war relics in two rooms on the first floor and in the building’s ground-floor atrium. At Col di Lana itself, history recalls the conquest of the summit by Italian troops after the explosion on the night of 17 April 1916.

Another destination is Castello di Andraz. It comprises a 14th-century structure whose remains were altered several times over the course of history. The complex was built on a rocky spur and adapts to its slope and natural morphological features. Educational activities, exhibitions and guided tours take place there in summer. In Arabba, the Vecchio Mulino di Arabba commemorates traditional engineering; its cogwheels, carved from very hard wood, have been preserved.
