Perarolo di Cadore between Wood History and River Landscape

Perarolo di Cadore combines a clearly recognizable history of wood with the river landscapes of the Piave and Boite. If you would like to discover a place not only through its location but also through its historical traces and special sites, you will find several different points of reference here: a museum in the town center, a garden associated with wood, paths along the water, and a distinctive bridge in Val Montina.

Timber Trade, Cidolo, and Giardino di Palazzo Lazzaris

In the center of Perarolo di Cadore, the Museo del Cidolo e del Legname is housed in an elegant 19th-century building surrounded by a terraced garden. The museum presents the history of the historical timber trade in Perarolo di Cadore. This involved logs that were floated along the Piave and Boite rivers to Venice. The Cidolo was a river installation that stopped, held back, and sorted logs. The term therefore does not refer to a general timber yard, but to a specific facility within this historical working context.

A second focus is the Giardino di Palazzo Lazzaris. There you will find two recently restored wooden pagodas, beds of aromatic plants, and a small museum dedicated to the history of the timber trade and the Cidolo. For your orientation, one limitation is also part of the picture of this garden: stairways form architectural barriers there. The site should therefore be assessed not only according to its themes, but also according to its architectural design.

The Piave and Boite as a Landscape Experience

At the confluence of the Piave and Boite, fly fishing is practiced according to the principles of “Catch and Release.” Paths run along both rivers, passing clear pools, wild banks, and changing reflections. In this way, the waterscape emerges not only as a historical setting for timber transport, but also as a distinct realm of experience with different riverside views and an explicitly mentioned form of fishing.

Church, Feast Day, and Footbridge

The Chiesa parrocchiale San Nicolò was first built of stone in 1455, using stones left over from the construction of the bridge over the Boite. Its origin story thus directly links the church to a specific construction event on the river. Another local tradition is the Festa patronale in honor of Saint Nicholas, celebrated in Perarolo di Cadore every year on December 6.

A distinctly different landmark is Perarolo’s suspended footbridge in Val Montina. It is a 103-meter-long Tibetan bridge with an average height of 90 meters. Its dimensions give this site its own character and clearly distinguish it from the town’s museum-related, religious, and riverside themes.
