Selva di Cadore can be discovered through several clearly distinct experiences: archaeology and Ladin culture, trails through forests and mountain landscapes, cycling, and winter sports. For your travel planning, you can therefore focus on specific cultural sites, a particular starting point for a hike, or the offerings of Ski Civetta.

Archaeology, Art and Ladin Culture

The Museo Civico “Vittorino Cazzetta” displays the original skeleton of the Mondeval Man in a climate-controlled floor display case. An audio guide and special lighting explain the burial and its associated finds. One of the most important exhibits is also a complete Mesolithic burial with grave goods from Mondeval de Sora. The collection is complemented by a cast of the surface of a boulder from Monte Pelmetto bearing dinosaur footprints.

If you would like to explore your visit in greater depth, you can attend educational workshops throughout the year, supervised by experienced specialists. The Chiesa di Santa Fosca has a 15th-century fresco of Saint Christopher on its main façade, as well as a painted image of Saint Fosca from the 17th century. An old document from 1234 also mentions a church dedicated to Saint Lawrence in Selva di Cadore. An altarpiece from the mid-17th century contains a winged altarpiece from the late 15th century; there is also an 18th-century tabernacle-shaped sacrament house.

The vibrant Ladin tradition includes preserving the local Ladin costume and rediscovering typical Ladin dances. This is upheld by the Unione dei Ladini di Selva, the Gruppo Folk de i Ladign de Selva and the affiliated Gruppo Minifolk. The old hamlet of L’Andria, together with Toffol, has also preserved its original character. Both form part of the Ladin settlement type known as the “Vila”, a village centre surrounded by fields and meadows.

Hiking Trails with Different Starting Points

The route to Forcella Forada begins at a car park at the third hairpin bend on Strada 251, on the route from Pescul towards Passo Staulanza. The trail leads through a sunny forest with rhododendrons and other rare flowers. At Forcella Forada, groups of chamois can be observed with the naked eye grazing among the rocks.

Another route of cultural and historical interest leads to the archaeological site of Mondeval. It begins in Santa Fosca and continues via L’Andria and Toffol towards Malga Pien de Vacia. Malga Pien De Vacia offers refreshments with simple traditional cuisine from Belluno and products reflecting the region’s agricultural diversity.

Along the trail through the Vila di L’Andria, a restored and still functioning mill stands beside the Loschiesuoi stream. For other types of excursion, the Sentiero Rif. Città di Fiume – Malga Prendera can be explored on foot, with snowshoes or on a ski tour. Anyone wishing to cycle to Passo Giau will find the start of the climb a few metres outside Selva di Cadore.

Winter Sports in Ski Civetta

Selva di Cadore is part of the Ski Civetta ski area. The area comprises 80 kilometres of slopes and a cross-country skiing centre with four trails of varying difficulty.
