Due Carrare offers several clearly distinct themes for independent exploration: the history of flight, sacred art, distinctive architectural forms, and landscapes shaped by paths and mills. The Museo del Volo opened on September 20, 1980, and is divided into thematic areas that trace the history of flight. This allows you to structure your visit around various themes rather than focusing on just a single exhibit.

Culture and Sacred Art

The hanging mausoleum of Marsilio da Carrara is located in the Abbazia di S. Stefano. It is attributed to Andriolo de Santis and was created around 1338. The attribution and approximate date of creation give the structure a precise historical context, so you do not have to limit yourself to a general description of the abbey.

The Chiesa di S. Giorgio also preserves a specific furnishing: a gilded wooden statue of Saint George defeating the dragon. The statue was used as a processional float. Palazzo Tondello provides an architectural accent with a portico of seven arches on octagonal brick columns. Above it is a loggia with eleven small arches.

Pontemanco on Foot or by Bicycle

The Borgo di Pontemanco developed as a symmetrical settlement consisting of two built-up areas on the two banks of the Biancolino. The embankments along the Pontemanco canal are also part of the townscape. They can be explored on foot and by bicycle; some sections run along the Ciclabile del sale e dello zucchero. If you would like to explore Due Carrare not only through individual buildings but also along a route, this provides a clearly documented option for a walk or bicycle ride.

Villas and Different Visiting Conditions

There is an important restriction to consider when planning a visit to Villa Priuli Petrobelli: the buildings are currently not open for interior tours. However, the villa can be circled on foot along its grounds. The route leads from the façade via Piazza Norma Cossetto and along the surrounding walls to Via Don Tecchio. Villa Priuli Petrobelli was also recently attributed to a design by Vincenzo Scamozzi dating from 1597.

Villa Capodaglio is opened to the public for events and wine tastings held by the villa’s agricultural enterprise, subject to prior appointment. The documented visiting arrangements therefore differ significantly: at Villa Priuli Petrobelli, the exterior is the main focus, while Villa Capodaglio can be visited only on specific occasions and by appointment.

The Historic Mill District

In Pontemanco’s historic mill district, one of the two mill buildings has been preserved. Among other features, six pits for the gears and an old granary have been restored.

Agriculture and Wine

Villa Dolfin includes the Mincana agricultural estate. It covers approximately 57 hectares, including 18 hectares of vineyards, and produces and sells wine. The land figures and wine production add an agricultural aspect to the cultural attractions, clearly distinct from the museum, sacred-art, and mill themes.
