Vivaro between the Magredi and the regional landscape
Vivaro is closely connected to the Magredi: the Magredi encompass Vivaro and were designated as a Special Area of Conservation (ZSC) in November 2013. They owe their distinctive landscape character to the gravel deposits of the Cellina and Meduna torrents. For planning your trip, the variety of possible ways to explore them is particularly interesting: the Magredi can be explored by bicycle, on foot or on horseback. This allows you to experience the landscape actively and in different ways, depending on your personal interests.
The name Magredi therefore refers not only to a single attraction, but to a landscape area whose geological origins remain apparent. The connection between Vivaro and the deposits of two torrents also makes this natural area interesting for travellers who wish to combine landscapes and regional features.
Historical sites and regional culture
An important cultural point of interest is the historic Latteria di Tesis. It houses a permanent exhibition on dairy processing in the Magredi. The exhibition documents the work of former dairies in Basaldella, Tesis and Vivaro and displays important dairy-processing equipment. It thus provides a specific insight into an earlier part of regional working life.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta is also one of the notable historical landmarks. The Neoclassical church was completed in 1870 and consecrated by Bishop Francesco Isola on 19 November 1909. Its history is therefore defined by two clearly dated milestones: its completion in the 19th century and its later consecration.
Several mills complete this picture. The Mulino di Vivaro dates from 1341 and has historically always been powered by the water of the Roggia di Vivaro, which is diverted from the Cellina. The Lataria is a typical building made of visibly hewn stone. It was built by its members in 1929 and served as Vivaro’s social dairy until 1981. The Mulin da la Miuta is an old 14th-century mill used for grinding grain. The historical spectrum therefore ranges from 14th-century mills to the 20th-century social dairy.
Archaeological connections are provided by the Antiquarium di Tesis. It is considered the richest collection in the province of Roman finds, particularly iron finds. The archaeological site of Monte Belo is located in the final section. Together with the mills, the history of dairy production and the church, this creates a varied picture of the region’s past, without reducing the individual sites to the same historical period.
