Conegliano combines a historic town centre with winegrowing, cultural collections and experiences in the surrounding countryside. For planning your trip, the town is particularly interesting if you would like to combine sightseeing, regional wine culture and independent exploration of Veneto. The main points of interest range from the cathedral and the traditional main street to wineries, cycling routes and nature along the Monticano.

Historic Centre and Notable Cultural Sites

Contrada Granda is the traditional name for the route of the main street through the historic centre of Conegliano. It includes Via XX Settembre, Piazza Cima and Via Beato Marco Ongaro. The Cathedral of Conegliano is also part of this historic setting: it was begun in 1345 by the Battuti. Inside, there is an altarpiece by Giambattista Cima da Conegliano from 1493. In the Sala dei Battuti, you can also see a fresco cycle with scenes ranging from the Creation of the World to the Last Judgment.

At the top of the hill of Conegliano, the castle’s campanile now houses the town museum. Another cultural stop is the restored cloister of the San Francesco convent, which mainly hosts cultural activities. The Museo Manzoni displays scientific materials, instruments and publications, as well as areas of the institute where the professor conducted his daily research. In Conegliano, you can therefore discover religious art, local history and scientific subjects in a variety of exhibition venues.

The Jewish cemetery of Conegliano is also part of the documented history of the town. It was established in 1545 on Cabalan Hill. Guided tours at this site are scheduled for the first Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; visits on other days are possible by prior appointment.

Winegrowing and the Prosecco Hills Landscape

Conegliano’s connection with winegrowing is also reflected in the G.B. Cerletti wine school. It was founded in 1876 and is considered the oldest wine school in Italy. In addition, you can take part in guided wine tastings at Conegliano’s wineries by prior reservation, as well as visit wineries and vineyards. The Strada del Prosecco e Vini dei Colli Conegliano-Valdobbiadene runs through the gentle morainic hills between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene. This makes Conegliano a concrete starting point for viewing the town’s history and wine landscape as different facets of the same region.

Cycling Route, River and Lake

For cycling travellers, the Munich–Venice cycling route passes through Conegliano. The Bike Tour Prosecco also starts in the town centre. This 35-kilometre e-bike ride passes through vineyards and is also suitable for less experienced cyclists. Depending on your preferred type of trip, you can focus on either a longer interregional route or a designated tour through the wine-growing landscape.

Along the Monticano, visitors can explore nature by the river from Conegliano. One path can lead north to Lago di Pradella, a small and picturesque lake formerly known as “Lago del Majo”. The former name belongs to the lake’s history and is not its current name. Together with the vineyards and hills, the river course adds a natural perspective to the character of the town.
