Sant'Alberto – Church, Art and Local Festivals
Accommodation in Sant'Alberto
Sant'Alberto is a hamlet of Zero Branco in the Marca Trevigiana. The village combines documented sacred buildings, the history of Maddalena Volpato and events where culture, regional cuisine and routes through the countryside come together. If you would like to explore Veneto independently while gaining an understanding of a smaller place with clear historical points of reference, Sant'Alberto offers several different points of connection.
Church, Art and Oratory
A central cultural landmark is the church of Sant'Alberto Vescovo e Martire. It is dedicated to Saint Albert, bishop and martyr. Its building history dates back at least to the reconstruction and reconsecration in 1621. In 1883, the church was reconsecrated in honour of Saint Alberto. Inside is the painting “Madonna del Rosario e i Santi Rocco, Sebastiano, Lorenzo e Domenico di Guzman” by Bartolomeo Orioli (1567–1629). The title of the work also names the saints depicted and makes the church's specific art-historical connection visible.
Sant'Alberto's cultural heritage also includes the Oratorio di San Girolamo. It was built between 1747 and 1757 by the Borsa family and was recently restored. Particularly noteworthy is the marble altar of Saint Jerome with an altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child with saints. A chapel dedicated to Saint Jerome, located not far from Maddalena Volpato's birthplace, is also documented. Thus, in Sant'Alberto you will find not just a single sacred building, but several named monuments, each with its own history and furnishings.
Following in the Footsteps of Maddalena Volpato
Maddalena Volpato was born in Sant'Alberto on 24 July 1918. A short walk tracing her roots begins at her rural birthplace in Bertoneria, which is no longer used today, a locality in the municipality of Zero Branco. This starting point is about three kilometres from the centre of the hamlet of Sant'Alberto. The walk ends at the cemetery of Sant'Alberto, where her remains have rested since November 1972. This provides a specific historical point of reference for orientation, connecting Sant'Alberto with Bertoneria and the village cemetery without restricting the history to a single building.
Sagra and Routes through the Countryside
The Sagra Paesana di Sant'Alberto is an annual summer festival in the hamlet of Sant'Alberto, in Zero Branco in the Marca Trevigiana. The Sagra includes a food stall open every evening, serving traditional dishes from Veneto. The festival therefore adds a distinct element alongside the churches and oratories: the focus here is on regional food and the recurring event format.
The route of the “4 passi par pair” event runs along the banks of the Zero and the Rio Vernise, through cultivated fields and the Montiron Oasis, and also includes the Green way. The event offered a choice of three routes measuring 5, 8 and 12 kilometres. It was open to everyone, including families with pushchairs, wheelchair users and people with dogs on leads.
