Miramare Castle and Grignano Park

Grignano combines a distinctive historic ensemble with an extensive park and a marine reserve. Miramare Castle was built between 1856 and 1860 as the residence of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg and his wife, Princess Charlotte of Belgium. It stands at the tip of the Karst peninsula of Grignano and was built from Istrian stone in an eclectic style designed by the Austrian engineer Carl Junker.

A visit includes more than the residence itself. The castle rooms display small chests, clocks, chinoiserie and archaeological finds. The stables also form a separate part of the ensemble: Carl Junker designed them, and they were likewise built between 1856 and 1860. The park covers 22 hectares. Its design combines elements of an English landscape garden with formally structured, geometric areas in the parterre. The greenhouses were intended for experimental botanical activities.

BioMa and the Underwater World of the Gulf of Trieste

BioMa is located in the right wing of the former stables, a five-minute walk from the Habsburg residence. The exhibition offers a year-round immersive interpretation of the environment of the Gulf of Trieste and the Miramare Marine Reserve – from the sea surface down to the depths of the sea. A special touch pool with benthic organisms complements this experience.

Guided tours of BioMa can be requested by arrangement for schools, groups and associations. These tours last one and a half hours. Another way to discover the protected marine environment is through Seawatching accompanied by WWF staff. It takes place every year from June to September in small groups.

Protected Marine Area and Access Points

The 90-hectare buffer zone of the Miramare Marine Reserve is 400 metres wide. In this area, all forms of fishing except shore-based recreational fishing, as well as anchoring, are prohibited. These regulations are part of the character of the place and distinguish a visit to the marine environment from an ordinary stay by the water.

The western entrance to Miramare Park is located at the port of Grignano. This also makes it possible to reach the park from the harbour side. Some regional trains stop at Miramare station. From there, you can reach the park in two minutes on foot through the upper entrance; BioMa can then be reached in 15 to 20 minutes through the botanical garden. To travel by bus, take line 6 from Trieste towards Grignano. Line 51 connects Trieste Airport or Monfalcone with Miramare.

Discover More Places in the Surrounding Area

If you are considering Grignano as a base for your trip, you can compare the location with other destinations in the same area: Villaggio del Pescatore, San Dorligo Della Valle, Samatorza, Longera, Duino-Aurisina, Sgonico, Repen and Malchina. This makes Grignano a clearly defined choice for historic architecture, parkland, botanical gardens and Miramare’s documented marine environment.
