Artegna between churches, paths and fortified history

Artegna combines sacred buildings, traces of fortified settlements and paths through woodland and stream landscapes. The Chiesetta di San Giorgio near Aplia Superiore was rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake and reconsecrated in 2013. Its façades bear the names of Artegna residents who fell in both world wars; one depiction is also dedicated to the history of Aquileia.

The central Via Villa is also one of the defining features of the townscape. A long sequence of buildings and several architecturally significant palazzi preserve the historic street layout there. On Colle di San Martino, the sightseeing circuit includes monumental remains of the cistern dating from the 5th to 6th century, ring walls and other uncovered elements of a late antique and medieval fortified settlement. The monumental complex also includes the Pieve and Castello di Savorgnan. The Chiesetta di San Martino in Artegna dates from the 16th century.

Waterfall, paths and excursions

La Turbine is a multi-level waterfall. You can view it in its entirety from its foot or reach its upper edge via the path. The easy Artegna route begins in the town centre, follows a wooded path along the edge of the village and leads to the centuries-old Mont washhouse on the Clama stream. This provides both a natural attraction and a specific destination with a local connection for your stay.

For cycling excursions, the Osoppo and Gemona Plain cycle circuit starts in Artegna. From Buja, the route continues across the plain towards Artegna. A hiking trail also leads from the village to Mount Faeit. Nearby is Lavio di Salt on the road from Artegna to Montenars, below the bridge over the Torrente Orvenco and just beyond the hamlet of Salt. The site is of considerable size.
