Fagagna combines impressive historical landmarks with wetlands, traditional regional crafts and paths through the countryside. If you are looking for a place with several clearly distinct experiences, the range here extends from medieval castle history and a historic parish church to birdwatching, cycle routes and local specialities.

Castle history and historical sites

Castello di Fagagna was one of the five castles that Emperor Otto II donated to Patriarch Rodoaldo in 983. Several sections of wall, the ruins of a tower, the castle chapel and a tall bell tower integrated into the main tower have survived from the extensive complex. The individual remains therefore do not present a fully preserved castle, but indicate the extent and historical importance of the site.

Another focal point is the Pieve di Fagagna. It is one of the oldest parish churches in Friuli and houses an organ by Francesco Comelli dating from 1788. On the northern side of the rampart there is also a viewpoint overlooking the mountain range. The site thus combines ecclesiastical-historical features with a tangible impression of the landscape.

Traditional crafts and regional culture

At the Cjase Cocèl Museum, volunteers demonstrate traditional crafts. These include knife sharpening, basket weaving, blacksmithing, spinning and lace-making. The collection's special items include locally made lace and toys. It therefore brings visibility not only to historical objects, but also to crafts connected with everyday life in the region.

Oasi dei Quadris and nature experiences

The Oasi dei Quadris is characterised by distinctive bodies of water enclosed by square-shaped borders. They bear witness to the clay quarry operated there since the 18th century. The wetlands are rich in bird species, including grey herons, moorhens, kingfishers and penduline tits. The Oasi was created in the late 1980s as part of a project to reintroduce the white stork in Italy. This means that traces of earlier use and a later nature conservation project meet at this site.

Cycle routes, events and local specialities

For a longer bike ride, the 30 km Collinbici panoramic cycle route is available. It passes through the municipalities of Fagagna, Moruzzo and Colloredo di Monte Albano. A shorter option with a different focus is Itinerario No. 4, an 8.5 km nature and panoramic route. The two options therefore differ above all in their stated length and the character described.

The Corsa degli Asini is also part of the local tradition. It originated on 6 September 1891; afterwards, it was held on the first Sunday in September in Fagagna's main square. The races may include qualifying rounds before the final takes place. A culinary speciality is provided by three dairies that continue to produce a cheese exclusively from raw, unpasteurised milk.
