Porpetto between River Landscapes and Historical Traces
Porpetto combines a clearly recognizable history with paths and experiences along the Corno River. The past is particularly vivid at the medieval Centa di Porpetto, which lies in isolation north of the town around the Church of San Vincenzo martire. An ancient castle once stood here; a map of it is now kept in the State Archives of Venice. The remains of the Centa include an oval earthen mound, the tower bell tower and, according to F. Piuzzi, a few sections of wall. The remains do not represent a fully preserved castle complex, but individual traces of an earlier fortification.
The Pieve di San Vincenzo and the Corno
The Pieve di San Vincenzo is closely connected with the river landscape. It is one of the four churches on the Corno and originally stood on an island surrounded by the river. At that time, it could be reached via a wooden bridge. Even today, a wooden bridge behind its apse leads to the Parco Intercomunale del Fiume Corno and to a particularly attractive path along the river. Thus, ecclesiastical history, a specific architectural detail and access to the landscape come together in one place.
Near Porpetto, the Corno follows a largely natural course. Near Castello, the river is used for canoeing and small boats. The Strada Bassa offers another way to experience the river landscape: it runs along the Corno, connects Porpetto with the hamlet of Chiarisacco in San Giorgio di Nogaro and is used for walking and running. The paths therefore clearly differ in character: the path behind the Pieve leads into the river park, while the Strada Bassa forms a connection between Porpetto and Chiarisacco.
Traditions, Festivals and Local Culture
A special tradition is Sbordon navigation. It occurs only in Porpetto and has been part of an event on the Corno River for more than 30 years. Reinocarb focuses on something else: the cycling competition follows a route across the entire municipal area of Porpetto. The two events involve the town in different ways, one through the river and the other through the municipal area.
The cultural calendar also includes the traditional festival “Perdòn da Madone”, promoted by the Pieve di San Vincenzo diacono e martire. The former Church of San Vincenzo martire was destroyed by fire. Another historic building is Palazzo Frangipane, which was built by the family of the same name at the end of the 17th century.
Literature and a Route Dedicated to Gina Marpillero
The Biblioteca Comunale di Porpetto offers formal and informal areas. Online catalogues, books, magazines, DVDs and internet resources are available there. The route dedicated to Gina Marpillero also begins at the Biblioteca comunale “Gina Marpillero”. It leads via the Centro civico opposite the church and the park lined by the river, ending in front of the green gate of her house, from which the garden can be seen.
