Hiking trails between Stupizza and Matajur

The Anello Stupizza-S.Andrea-Montefosca circular route is 8.4 kilometres long and follows CAI trails 723, 752 and 735. These three trail numbers therefore belong directly to the circular route described and define its clearly outlined course. Another option is the Sentiero naturalistico del monte Matajur: it starts in Mersino Alto, is 12.6 kilometres long and leads to the summit of Matajur at an altitude of 1,641 metres.

Monte Mia is also one of Pulfero's notable natural features. It reaches 1,237 metres above sea level and is considered the municipality of Pulfero's most important ecologically untouched area. Near the Centro Visite di Stupizza there is also the Palestra di Roccia, managed by CAI Cividale.

The Centro Visite di Stupizza complements the trails with thematic content: visitors can see a replica bear cave, watch videos and view documents on university research, as well as follow themed trails designed for schools and families. In addition to the routes described, this provides educational and natural-history perspectives on the landscape.

Natural features and distinctive aspects of the landscape

At Coceanzi-Pegliano in Pulfero, the monumental Castagno monumentale di Pegliano is recorded. The chestnut tree is 25 metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 783 centimetres. Its dimensions make it a distinct natural landmark among the sites described.

A remarkable geological feature is the Grotta di San Giovanni d'Antro. It is a long, intermittently active karst spring that extends into the mountain. During heavy rain, a considerable watercourse flows through it; even during periods of low water, there are several lakes inside. Independent visits to the cave are not permitted in order to protect its natural and cultural heritage. This site therefore differs clearly from the trails described above: access for visitors is expressly restricted.

Fountains, castles and churches

Several fountains in Pulfero recall different historical contexts. The central Fontane dei Cavalleggeri di Alessandria bears a Habsburg eagle and four portraits of rulers. The two fountains outside the town, by contrast, display the Cavalleggeri coat of arms beneath the crown of the House of Savoy.

The remains of Castello di Ahrensperg lie near Biacis in the municipality of Pulfero, by the church of San Giacomo Apostolo. The castle once controlled the road connecting Cividale with the transalpine region of Noricum in Austria and formed part of the medieval fortification system along the Natisone River. Legal and administrative assemblies were held at the Lastre di Antro until the 19th century. They were associated with the Banche di Antro and di Merso and contributed to the autonomy of the Natisone Valleys.

Above Lasiz stands the Church of San Donato, with large-scale frescoes probably dating from the 16th century. The Alpine Church of San Donato Martyr in Lasiz is also included in the route of the 44 votive churches of the Natisone Valleys. This site therefore combines pictorial decoration with a broader religious cultural route.
