Palmanova – Fortress City in a Star-Shaped Layout

Palmanova is a fortress city with an extraordinary urban form: its layout creates a nine-pointed star. The Fortress as the Defining Theme of the City

Palmanova’s defensive system consists of three rings of fortifications. They were built in three historical construction phases: the first ring was created from 1593 to 1620, the second from 1665 to 1683, and the third from 1806 to 1809. The first construction phase took place during the city’s founding period; the two later rings expanded the defensive system in subsequent historical eras.

A prominent point of reference within the city is Piazza Grande. The hexagonal central square was formerly known as Piazza d’Armi and served as the garrison’s parade ground. The square therefore combines its present-day central function with a clearly defined historical use. Circular Trail, Cycling Route and Special Perspectives

The Anello delle Fortificazioni is suitable for hiking, cycling, mountain biking, horseback riding and Nordic walking. This makes it suitable for different ways of exploring the fortress landscape without limiting the circular trail to a single activity. In addition, the FVG7 Friuli Cycleway (C700) ends at Piazza Grande in Palmanova. Those travelling by bicycle will find a specifically named destination there.

The multimedia experience Ascensore Virtuale offers a different view of the city. It allows visitors to see the star-shaped city of Palmanova from the air and all the way into space. In the Sala Video Multimediale, visitors can see a 3D video mapping of the Palmanova fortress and virtual storytellers. The two offerings have different focuses: one expands the view to encompass the entire city layout, while the other presents the fortress through an audiovisual production.

History and Visiting Formats

The Museum of the First World War and the Fortress of Palmanova preserves documents, weapons, uniforms and memorabilia. The collection covers the history of the city from its foundation in 1593 to the present day. The museum’s focus therefore extends from the creation of Palmanova into more recent times and complements the construction history of the fortification rings with specific historical objects.

The Gallerie di Contromina are open on weekends, during special openings or to groups by prior reservation. This visiting format differs from unrestricted daily opening: groups can make an advance reservation, while additional openings take place on weekends or on special dates.
