Tolmezzo offers you a journey through folk art, sacred history, and vibrant traditions. This cultural focus is particularly evident at the Museo Carnico and in the historic churches of the town and its surroundings. The experience is complemented by a cycle path to Arta Terme and traditional festivals held in Tolmezzo in July and September.

Folk Art in Palazzo Campeis

The Fondazione Museo Carnico delle Arti Popolari Michele Gortani presents its collections in more than 30 rooms of the 18th-century Palazzo Campeis. In terms of content, the collection spans the 13th to the 20th century. The collection and the building therefore originate from different centuries.

Cathedral, Frescoes, and Historic Religious Buildings

The present-day Duomo di San Martino was built in 1750 after the previous church was demolished and was consecrated in 1764. Inside is a fresco cycle by Nicola Grassi dating from 1731–1732. A fresco cycle is a connected series of wall paintings. If you focus on architectural history and art when choosing your destination, the cathedral therefore combines a specific construction date with dated painted decoration.

The older churches also have their own distinctive features. The Pieve di San Floriano dates from the early 9th century. A pieve is a historic parish church. You can reach the Torre Picotta on foot via Via Cascina, a side street of Via Roma. Access to the Chiesa di Santa Maria oltre But is via a stone staircase carved into the rock with 398 steps. The Torre Picotta and the Chiesa di Santa Maria oltre But therefore have different access routes.

Illegio: Arches and a Mill Still in Operation

Illegio is known as the “Village of Arches” because numerous houses have doors or portals with round arches. Round arches are semicircular arches above doors or portals. This recurring architectural detail therefore shapes the townscape. The historic heritage also includes the Mulin dal Flec, one of the 17th-century mills in Illegio that is still in operation today. The village thus combines visible architectural forms with a technical monument whose operation continues into the present day.

Cycle Path and Traditional Festivals

For exploring by bicycle, a cycle path runs from Tolmezzo to Arta Terme. Those who wish to plan their stay around local traditions can also note two different dates: the Sagra del Borgat is a historic traditional festival held in Tolmezzo in July, while the Festa della Mela is a traditional festival held in Tolmezzo in September. The two events therefore take place in different months and provide distinct seasonal points of reference.
