Marano Lagunare combines a distinctive local character with the landscapes of the lagoon. The Marano Lagoon lies between the last coastal promontory of Lignano Sabbiadoro and the Grado Lagoon. Marsh vegetation and the typical fishermen’s huts built from reeds and wood, known as casoni, characterize this setting. Lagoon Landscape and Nature Experiences
The Valle Canal Novo Nature Reserve is located in the immediate vicinity of the built-up area of Marano Lagunare. It consists of a former fishpond and areas used for agriculture. This former use is part of the documented history of the area and should not be equated with a current form of operation. The nature reserve includes a lagoon aquarium that recreates important lagoon habitats and presents the organisms found there.
The Valle Canal Novo visitor center also draws on local building traditions: its buildings are designed after the model of the casoni. Services, refreshments and educational programs are offered there; there are also opportunities to observe the lagoon environment. Valle Canal Novo thus combines the characteristic landscape with an informative presentation of its habitats.
Another distinctive landscape is the Riserva Foci dello Stella. The protected area covers 1,377 hectares and extends across the delta of the Stella River and typical lagoon areas with canals, mudflats and sandbanks. Those who want to understand lagoons not only as bodies of water but also in their different shoreline and delta forms will encounter another specific expression of this natural environment here.
Old Town, Museum and Visible History
The old town of Marano Lagunare preserves the memory of an ancient fortress in its urban layout. Its supporting basic structure has remained unchanged. This layout provides its own approach to the history of the town, while several individual buildings and collections reveal further historical periods.
The Archaeological Museum of the Lagoon preserves more than 500 handmade objects from the lagoons of Marano and Grado as well as from the coastal strip behind them. The exhibition traces the settlement history of the lagoon: it spans the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, the Roman period and the Middle Ages through to the Renaissance. The focus is therefore not only on a single historical event, but on the long sequence of settlement.
The parish church of San Martino houses an organ built in 1773 by the Venetian organ builder Francesco Dacci. A functioning clock mechanism from 1739 is also preserved in the Torre Millenaria. Both details add specific evidence from the 18th century to the view of the old town.
Fishing Tradition and Recurring Events
The Tocco is a traditional fishing event in Marano Lagunare that takes place twice a year: the “Tocco di Quaresima” in spring and the “Tocco di Peschere” in autumn. Another regular date is the procession of San Vito, which takes place every year on June 15 or on the following Sunday.
