Discover Venzone: Defensive Ring, Trails and Culture

If you are looking for a place with reconstructed history, distinctive cultural sites and various ways to access the surrounding landscape, Venzone offers several distinct approaches. The defensive ring encloses the town in an irregular hexagon with fourteen inner insulae. Its circumference is approximately 1,300 metres; the complex is complemented by sixteen towers. Four gates, arranged according to the cardinal directions, provide access to the citadel of Venzone.

Defensive Ring and Reconstruction

Despite extensive reconstruction, Venzone’s defence system remains the only surviving example in the area of a defensive ring dating from the 13th century. The history of the town is particularly vividly conveyed by its reconstruction: the original urban layout was preserved, while houses and monuments were rebuilt to restore their former appearance. The stones were catalogued individually; more recent structures were not reconstructed. Those interested in historic townscapes and the concrete connection between what remained and what was rebuilt can therefore explore Venzone from several perspectives.

Cathedral, Museum and Unusual Insights

The cathedral also provides an entry point into Venzone’s history. The sculptor Master Giovanni worked on the northern portal in 1308. A virtual reconstruction of the cathedral was created based on the building’s original structure. The architectural parts affected by the collapses were modelled almost stone by stone as 3D graphics.

Tiere Motus is housed in Palazzo Orgnani Martina. Using photographs, videos and documents, the museum tells the story of the 1976 earthquake and the reconstruction of Friuli; it opened in 2009. The crypt of the cemetery chapel of S. Michele also contains five mummified bodies dating from 1348 to 1881. Another thematic perspective is offered by the permanent exhibition “Forests, Man, Economy in Friuli Venezia Giulia”, which includes a mycological exhibition comprising more than three hundred mushroom specimens.

Hiking Trails between the Centre, River and Mountains

For a combination of sightseeing and activity, the “Sentiero Natura delle chiesette di Venzone” is suitable. The easy hike is located in the immediate vicinity of the historic centre and offers views of the surrounding mountains and the Tagliamento River. This allows a short excursion into the landscape to be incorporated into exploring the town without abandoning the cultural focus of the trip.

A different route is offered by the “Anello di Pioverno” circular trail, which begins in Venzone. After crossing the bridge, it follows the riverbank and passes through cool, shady woodland. The different descriptions help you make your choice: the Sentiero Natura combines proximity to the historic centre with mountain and river views, while the Anello di Pioverno focuses on the route along the riverbank and through the forest.

There are also specific points of reference for travelling to the area and taking further excursions. The access information provided by the Julian Prealps Nature Park lists Venzone railway station as one of the stations from which various destinations can be reached by continuing by scheduled bus services. The train-and-bicycle service on route C102 stops directly at Venzone station. For cycling travellers, the cycling stage of the Alpe-Adria-FVG-1 route between Venzone and Udine also begins in Venzone; it heads south towards Gemona del Friuli.
