Chiusaforte combines a distinctive military history with trails leading to waterfalls, geological features and a connection to Sella Nevea. If you are planning your stay independently, you can choose between cultural and historical attractions, short orientation routes within the municipality and longer trails. This combination is also helpful when searching for suitable accommodation: first decide whether the fortress history, a hike, cycling access or an excursion towards Sella Nevea should be the main focus of your trip.

The Fortress and History of Chiusaforte

The Fortress of Chiusaforte was built in 1904 and became operational shortly afterwards. The complex still contains visible casemates, a kitchen, storage rooms, officers’ quarters, soldiers’ quarters, a workshop and a power station. The fortress therefore offers several concrete points of reference for planning a trip in which not only the external complex but also its former function plays a role.

The permanent exhibition Memorie della Canal del Ferro is located in the former Zucchi Barracks. It displays ammunition, soldiers’ personal equipment and materials about the provisioning and lives of soldiers at the front. In addition, the history of Chiusaforte recalls a customs station of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, which the town had hosted since the Middle Ages.

The military surroundings also include the Costa Curnic artillery battery. It was planned with four 75 mm steel guns to support the Fortress of Chiusaforte. The planned nature of this facility is important for its classification: it describes a military infrastructure project and does not automatically mean that it is a facility that exists or is operational today.

Waterfalls, Educational Trails and Different Routes

Several different destinations are available for those interested in nature. The MIRABILA – Sentiero botanico del Bila Pec botanical trail is one of the routes in the municipality of Chiusaforte. The Foran dal Mus geological trail brings visitors close to the exceptional geological formations in the highest part of the Canin Massif. A waterfall map of Chiusaforte also shows the locations of 13 waterfalls and can help structure the selection of a suitable excursion.

The Fontanone di Goriuda offers a special trail experience: a path leads through a protected rock grotto close to the spray and provides a special view into the waterfall. Another route to Raunis and the waterfalls of the Belepeit stream begins at Chiusaforte Town Hall and ends there again. This information helps with day planning because the starting and ending points are in the same place, without implying any specific walking time or level of difficulty.

The Costa Curnic artillery battery is also connected to a specifically described access route. The trail leads from the first bridgehead over the Rio Raccolana on the SP76 provincial road towards Sella Nevea, via CAI Trail 632 towards Rifugio Gilberti, and reaches a military road after approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes on foot. Take this approximate duration into account when planning and distinguish this access route from the road leading to the fortress.

Getting There, Cycle Route and Accommodation Choice

Bus route 191 connects Chiusaforte with Sella Nevea. Chiusaforte Station is accessible both from the Alpe Adria Cycle Route and from the town. This means that travel planning does not have to focus solely on the car; depending on your starting point, you can also consider taking the bus or incorporating a cycling stage into your plans.

To find your way to the fortress, the access road branches off near the Ponte Peraria railway tunnel and climbs Col Badin. In winter, the Sella Nevea ski area adds to the range of activities in the surrounding area: its slopes offer freeriding, snowboarding and alpine skiing. If you are looking for a hotel or other accommodation in Chiusaforte, you can therefore weigh up a stay focused on history and waterfalls, a connection to the Alpe Adria Cycle Route and excursions towards Sella Nevea. You should then check the specific accommodation features for each individual offer.
