Raibl: Mining History and Lake Landscape

Raibl combines an impressive mining history with a landscape of mountains, forests and lakes. If you would like to focus your stay on culture, the key experiences lead to Cave del Predil: former mines, museums and historic memorial sites there tell the story of the area's past. At the same time, the CAI trail “I Lupi di Cave del Predil” and the shores of Lago Predil offer further options for planning a trip featuring nature and landscape experiences.

Mining History around Cave del Predil

Mining activity in Cave del Predil began in the time of ancient Rome and ended in 1991. In addition to the actual extraction facilities, the mining site includes a former warehouse, the offices of the mining company and two identical workers' houses. This makes it possible to view not only the extraction of the ore, but also the architectural context of the former mining complex.

A guided tour leads through the former mine. Tours explain how the ore was extracted. The Raibl International Geomineral Park with the former mine is located in Cave del Predil. It lies at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level between Monte Re, Monte Cinque Punte and Lago di Raibl. Miniera Lab complements a visit to the mine with a documentary tour that explains its history and special features. “Viaggio al Centro della Terra” also offers an immersive multimedia adventure in Cave del Predil.

Museums and Historical Impressions

The “Alpi Giulie” Military History Museum covers the period from the Napoleonic Wars to the Second World War. Its collections on the First World War show the front from the perspective of both the Italian army and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. For visitors who would like to view historical developments from different perspectives, this creates a clear focus within the trip.

You can also encounter the history of the area outside the museum. The bell tower of the Chiesa di Sant'Anna has a square shaft with loopholes and clock faces, as well as a curved, shingle-covered roof spire. The ossuary at the cemetery of Cave del Predil preserves the remains of more than 300 Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell in battle, including many members of the 7th Regiment from Klagenfurt.

Forest Paths and Lakes for Trip Planning

The CAI-665 trail “I Lupi di Cave del Predil” leads through deciduous and coniferous forest. It therefore complements the sightseeing with movement through the landscape, without requiring you to give up the cultural focus of your stay. Swimming is possible at Lago Predil in summer; there is also a walking path around its shores. Lago di Raibl is located a few kilometres from the centre of Cave del Predil. During the warm season, its shores and two equipped bathing facilities offer opportunities for relaxation.

The location is also easy to navigate for arrival: Cave del Predil is easily accessible via State Road 54. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether you are visiting Raibl primarily for its mining history, military history collections, forest paths or lake landscape.
