Fortress History and Historic Sites

The Osoppo Fort was declared a national monument in 1923. At the fort, visitors can see remnants from the First World War and earlier centuries. The events surrounding the fort are also part of Osoppo’s historical character. The Friulians from the surrounding area drove out the imperial garrisons stationed there and resisted their counteroffensive for almost seven months, until October. The Fortezza di Osoppo can be visited via three routes: Castel Novo, Forte sotterraneo and Colle Napoleone.

On the Colle di Osoppo, the Chiesa di San Pietro stands near the fort on the site of an earlier Early Christian basilica. This allows a visit to the fortifications to be complemented by another historic site, without conflating the different functions of the individual stops.

Circular Trails with Views and Nature Experiences

For a manageable hike, the Anello del Colle di Osoppo is a good choice. The easy circular trail is 5.1 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes. It leads through the Parco del Rivellino and follows the Sentiero CAI 720. Along the way, there are views of the Tagliamento and the Prealpi Carniche.

The Sentiero CAI 720 begins on a paved road below the slopes of the Forte di Osoppo, outside the Rivellino bastions at an altitude of 180 metres. If you would like to compare the trails around Osoppo, you can also explore the Sorgive di Bars on an easy circular route through a wide variety of natural habitats. The Sorgiva di Bars is a wetland with marshy meadows and hygrophilous forests interspersed with steppe-like Magredi landscapes.

Osoppo’s green landscapes are ideal for walks and cycling excursions; the routes run almost entirely on flat terrain. The Orto Botanico Osoppo is home to more than 300 botanical species. The grounds also include an open-air museum with old agricultural equipment. This allows you to choose between different focuses when planning your day: fortress history, a circular trail, botanical impressions or a ride through the landscape.

Orchid Festival

The Festa delle Orchidee takes place in the streets of Osoppo’s historic centre and in the natural areas where numerous orchid species grow in the wild. Every year, the festival includes guided excursions during the main flowering period. Traditional dishes and an enogastronomic programme round out the event.
