Socchieve – Churches, Trails and Mountain Culture

Socchieve combines remarkable churches with trails through the Tagliamento landscape. This character is particularly evident around the Pieve di Castoia, which stands on a hill between Nonta and Socchieve and overlooks the middle course of the Tagliamento. The church is dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata and is considered a symbol of Christianity in the valley. There is a car park at the foot of the ascent.

Trails between Pieve, Lumiei and Monte Nolia

The route Dalla Pieve di Castoia agli Stavoli combines cultural and nature experiences in the form of a walking trail. It crosses the Lumiei via a concrete ford. After this crossing, follow the signs for the Cammino delle Pievi and CAI trail no. 239. This clearly distinguishes the individual sections of the route: the Pieve is the cultural starting point, while the remainder follows a specific river crossing and designated trail markers.

Another route option is the Anello del Monte Nolia. It begins in Feltrone and circles Monte Nolia via the Stavoli della Congregazione. The loop initially passes through mixed forests above Feltrone, then reaches Provincial Road 35 in the Conca di Pani area. From Socchieve’s smallest hamlet, the trail offers views across the Val Tagliamento as far as Tolmezzo and Monte Amariana. The route’s cultural and historical details include an inscription carved into stone. It is connected with a peace agreement between Voltois and Feltrone that settled a border dispute.

For a shorter, clearly measured mountain hike, there is the Salita a Casera Chiarzo. The ascent is approximately 2 kilometres long, rises about 380 metres and is estimated to take around 1 hour and 30 minutes. It forms part of the CAI trail network and is well signposted along its entire length as trail no. 235. Casera Chiarzo has a stone fireplace, a table and two benches in the main room; outside there is a large table made from logs. Trekking is cited in Socchieve as a holiday activity in a quiet, nature-oriented setting.

Churches and regional culture

Beyond the Pieve di Castoia, Socchieve also has a strong historical character. The Church of San Martino is a national monument and contains an important fresco cycle by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo from 1493. The Alta Valle del Tagliamento route leads to the Church of San Martino in Socchieve.

In Viaso stands the Church of San Giovanni Battista, with a Gothic window and a polygonal presbytery; it dates from the 15th century.

A seasonal addition is the Rassegna Carnica: Arte, Cultura, Lavoro. The exhibition and market are dedicated both to traditional mountain crafts and to work using newer techniques. The event takes place in summer, between July and August, and has been held for more than 30 years. In this way, Socchieve’s range extends from a single, specifically signposted mountain route through sacred art to regional crafts.
