Discover Tarcento: Culture, Trails and Regional Delicacies
Accommodation in Tarcento
Tarcento combines a distinctive Epiphany tradition with historic traces, waterside paths, viewpoints and regional specialities.
A special tradition in January
The Friulian Epiphany in Tarcento is celebrated every year on 5 and 6 January. This tradition includes races featuring fiery carts, a torchlight procession to Coia and the lighting of the Pignarûl Grant. Those visiting Tarcento at this time can plan their trip around these fixed dates. Epiphany is also associated with pinza, a rustic traditional sweet pastry. It is linked to the days of fire and winter, as well as the New Year oracles surrounding the Pignarûl Grant.
Historic traces and the environment of Friuli
Coia Castle was built in 1313. After largely collapsing following a severe earthquake in 1520, only the remains of a tower survive today. The castle is also known as “Castellaccio” and, in Friulian, “Cjscjelà t”. In Tarcento, therefore, the focus is not on a fully preserved complex, but on a historic site whose present appearance is defined by the remains of the tower.
Another way to explore the history of the area is through the Museo archeologico naturalistico in Tarcento. It presents the local environment and the environment of Friuli through various geological and historical stages of development. Those who do not wish to consider nature and culture separately will find a suitable thematic starting point here. The historic houses on Via Frangipane are generally viewed from the outside unless special openings or events are taking place.
Riverside paths, waterfalls and routes into the hills
Tarcento has a riverside promenade along the Torre River. There is also a walking path along the right bank of the Torre, with a starting or end point at a new pedestrian bridge. The bridge connects the centre of Ceschia with Via dei Mulini.
In Sedilis, walks lead through hamlets and farmsteads. The paths climb towards the Bernadia ridge and viewpoints overlooking the Val Torre and the plain. Plan di Paluz is a green location with scenic views and serves as a starting point or stopover for walks and cycling tours towards Sedilis and Monte Bernadia. Another distinctive landscape feature is the Crosis waterfalls, which are considered an important geosite. They formed after the construction of a hydroelectric plant designed for industrial purposes, which Arturo Malignani designed in 1898.
Regional orientation for your stay
The different facets can be clearly distinguished when planning your trip: the January dates represent a highly ritualised tradition, the castle ruins and museum focus on historical and natural-history themes, while the Torre, Sedilis, Plan di Paluz and the Crosis waterfalls offer different landscape experiences. Ramandolo DOCG is one of the designations that characterise this area. The wine is produced from vineyards on hillside slopes, where the work is still carried out by hand and with patience.
If you are looking for a hotel in Tarcento, it is best to choose your travel dates and preferred daily rhythm according to these interests: around Epiphany, for cultural sightseeing, or for walks, cycling tours and viewpoints.
