Crafts and Historic Sites

Carnica Arte Tessile offers a special insight into the character of the area. The company continues Carnia’s textile craft tradition and mainly produces fabrics and household linen made from linen, linen/cotton blends and other natural fibres. The entire production cycle takes place on the premises; experienced weavers make the fabrics according to authentic craft principles.

The surrounding area also reveals the region’s long history. The Colle Santino archaeological site features layers dating from Roman times through the Middle Ages. At Col di Zuca, traces of a human settlement from the early Christian period can be found; the mosaics uncovered in the excavations there can be viewed up close. The Pieve di Santa Maria Maddalena is one of the oldest churches in Carnia. It can be reached by car via a paved road or on foot along a trail.

Easy Trails and Special Landscapes

For a shorter outing, the easy Pineta–Col di Zuca–Col Santino loop is a good choice. The loop is 1.8 km long; it takes about 30 minutes to reach Col di Zuca and one hour on foot to reach Col Santino. This combines nature and cultural themes along a manageable route, with the two time estimates referring to the respective sections leading to the destinations mentioned.

The Pineta in Villa Santina covers around 60 hectares of woodland and is crossed by small paths and streams. For more extensive landscape experiences, the Intermunicipal Park of the Carnic Hills features a network of trails leading to interesting places with impressive views and picturesque landscapes. Villa Santina and Invillino are easy and interesting destinations for cultural and natural-history excursions for visitors of all ages.

Among the area’s notable waterfalls is the Radime Waterfall, considered one of the highest in Europe and locally known as “la farine dal diaul”. The Plera Waterfall can be reached via a trail leading from the Tagliamento to its source and the waterfall; the site is considered charming and atmospheric.

More Challenging Activities

Those looking for a significantly more challenging activity will find the “Farina del Diavolo” via ferrata, a route rated difficult (D). Below the Radime Waterfall, it includes a Tibetan bridge. The Forra del Vinadia offers a different type of experience: the gorge is 200 metres deep and is suitable for canyoning. Both destinations therefore represent activities that clearly differ from the easy trails through forests, archaeological sites and churches.

The Madonna del Ponte also reflects the relationship between the landscape and regional history. A small chapel was built there to protect the raftsmen after they had died in a dangerous whirlpool nearby.
