Alberoni represents a special side of the Lido: at the southern end of the island, the beach, a designated nature reserve and paths along the coast come together. This makes the area particularly interesting if, alongside Venice’s well-known city views, you would also like to put the southern Lido with its natural and cultural connections into context. Alberoni is located next to the Malamocco harbour entrance. Several specific routes lead here, while nature, film history and the planning history of the Circolo Golf Venezia can also be connected in one place.

Alberoni Nature Reserve and Kentish Plover

The Alberoni nature reserve is part of the Natura 2000 site IT 3250023 “Lido di Venezia: biotopi litoranei”. This area is designated both as a Special Conservation Area (ZSC) and as a Special Protection Area (ZPS). The connection with nature is not merely abstract: the Kentish plover, known in Italian as “fratino”, breeds on Alberoni Beach. Thus, the landscape’s distinctive character ranges from the large-scale Natura 2000 designation to a specific bird species named at the beach.

Getting there via Santa Maria Elisabetta

Alberoni can be reached from the Santa Maria Elisabetta landing stage on the Lido by bus lines A or B. As an additional connection, line 11 runs directly to Pellestrina. If you would like to visit the WWF oasis Dune degli Alberoni, travel from Venice on ACTV waterbus lines 1, 51 and 61 to Lido, Santa Maria Elisabetta, and then continue by bus line A to Alberoni.

WWF Oasis, Cycling Tour and Murazzi Path

The WWF oasis Dune degli Alberoni can be visited freely throughout the year. It also offers themed tours for groups and school classes by prior reservation. For individual exploration of the Lido, a recommended cycling tour is also documented, leading from the Santa Maria Elisabetta landing stage to Alberoni. The cycle and footpath along the Murazzi ends at Alberoni Beach. This means that the area offers both access by public transport and a designated cycling and walking connection from the landing stage.

Lighthouse, Film History and Golf History

The Faro Alberoni, also known as Faro Rocchetta, is visible from the Adriatic. Another cultural connection leads to the Bagni Alberoni, which served as a filming location for the exterior scenes of Luchino Visconti’s film “Death in Venice”. The history of the Circolo Golf Venezia is also closely connected with Alberoni, without this implying any current statement about its operation. The first nine holes of the Circolo Golf Venezia were planned in Alberoni in 1928. In 1951, the Circolo Golf Venezia was expanded to 18 holes. A 100-hectare site was selected for the Circolo Golf Venezia in Alberoni, at the southern end of the Lido next to the Malamocco harbour entrance.
