In Dese, natural and architectural history come together in specific places: forest areas along the Dese River, paths in the Bosco Dese, a Romanesque-Gothic church and Forte Cosenz each offer a different focus. Three questions can help with your trip planning: which landscape interests you, are you more drawn to church or fortress architecture, and what seasonal and transport conditions suit your stay?

If you are looking for accommodation, the natural areas, historic buildings and bus connection can each serve as a different point of reference for your plans. The forests appeal to travelers interested in the landscape, while the church and fort each offer their own perspective on the area’s history.

Forests, Paths and Wetlands

The forest areas in the Dese district are bordered by the river of the same name. Bosco Dese can be explored along specially created paths. However, public access is closed during the hunting season from September to February. This period is therefore an important part of planning a visit: consider your interest in the paths alongside the season of your stay.

Bosco Praello is one of three forest areas in Dese and can be reached via Via Bosco Costa. When finding your way around, it is useful to distinguish between the two forest names: Bosco Dese has specially created paths, while Via Bosco Costa is the access route for Bosco Praello. This also makes it clear which area you have in mind when planning your trip.

Two other changes to the landscape are associated with specific dates. In 2022, Bosco di Dese was expanded by 2.5 hectares of lowland forest. A new wetland area was nearing completion in July 2026. It was created by converting the agricultural land known as “Parco Terronazzo Sud” and covers 15,000 square meters. These add different landscape features to the forest areas: woodland paths, lowland forest and a newly created wetland area.

Church and Fortress Architecture

The Chiesa della Natività di Maria is a Romanesque-Gothic church built of exposed brick. It includes the preserved old bell tower, which formerly served as a watchtower and was built around the year 1000 using reused Roman materials. The church’s architectural style and the tower’s history offer different perspectives: the former identifies the architectural style of the church, while the latter points to the tower’s former function and materials. A visit to the Church of Santa Maria di Dese is documented for the year 957. This date refers to the visit; the approximate date of around 1000 refers to the construction of the bell tower.

Forte Cosenz adds a military-historical landmark to this picture of Dese. It was completed in 1911, built entirely of reinforced concrete and belongs to the second generation of forts. As part of the Venetian mainland defense project, it is associated with the so-called “Campo Trincerato di Mestre.” Forte Cosenz lies north of Dese along the railway line to Trieste. The church and fort can thus be distinguished by their construction and history: exposed brick and a bell tower once used as a watchtower contrast with a reinforced-concrete structure incorporated into a defense project.

Getting There and Trip Planning

A regional bus line serves Dese. Check the timetable in effect before traveling. Along with the seasonal access closure at Bosco Dese, the bus connection is a practical planning point if you want to include nature trails and architectural history in your stay. When choosing a focus for your trip, you can also consider whether you are most interested in the forest areas, the development of the wetland or the architectural history of the church and fort.

If you would like to include other destination ideas in your trip planning, you can also consider Mestre, Zelarino, Altino and Campalto as destinations in their own right.
