Caprino Veronese: Monte Baldo, History and Wine
Accommodation in Caprino Veronese
Caprino Veronese combines nature on Monte Baldo with historic sites, museums, ancient paths and regional wine culture. If you would like to choose your stay based on different experiences, you will find both panoramic hiking trails and challenging cycling options here, as well as evidence dating from the Paleolithic to Roman times and buildings from several centuries.
Monte Baldo, Trails and Sporting Experiences
The Monte Baldo Ovest IT3210039 Natura 2000 site is located within the municipality of Caprino Veronese. It is designated both as an SCI and as an SPA. In addition, Caprino Veronese has panoramic hiking trails on Monte Baldo. The Bergola spring in the Caprino valley has a particularly notable historical connection: it was already canalised in Roman times.
The “Vie dell’Acqua” follow ancient paths lined with fountains, wash houses and mills. The focus is therefore not only on the landscape, but also on the former use of water. For days geared towards sport, there are several clearly different formats: the challenging Monte Baldo cycling tour runs mainly along minor roads and unpaved paths that climb the southern side of the mountain. It requires fitness and mountain-biking skills. A private e-bike tour for advanced riders, on the other hand, crosses Monte Baldo through historic sites and alpine pastures, offering changing landscape impressions throughout the year.
Historic Sites and Museums
In the hamlet of Platano stands the Platano dei Cento Bersaglieri, a monumental Oriental plane tree in the centre of the village. It is considered a national monument. In Lubiara, Villa Colpani was built between 1535 and 1789 by the noble Colpani family. Platano is also home to Villa Nichesola, also known as Villa dei Quattro Camini. It is a rare 15th-century aristocratic residence. Corte Carrara in Carrara di Pesina was likewise built in the 15th century as a simple and functional palazzo-farmhouse.
The Museo Civico Paleontologico-Archeologico preserves a palaeontological collection and archaeological artefacts from the Monte Baldo area. The finds date from the Paleolithic to Roman times. The Museo Civico di Caprino Veronese is housed on the ground floor of the 18th-century Palazzo Carlotti.
Sacred buildings also form part of the townscape. The Chiesa di Santa Cristina in the hamlet of Ceredello dates from the 13th century and stands on the remains of an ancient Roman temple. The annual Santa Cristina festival includes religious celebrations, concerts, performances and folk dancing; the official feast day is 24 July.
Individual Works with a Special Art-Historical Classification
Il Compianto sul Cristo Morto is a sculptural group made of organogenic limestone dating from the 14th century. The work was originally polychrome. It is attributed to the “Master of Santa Anastasia”, later identified as Rigino di Enrico; the sculptural group is dated to the first half of the 14th century. The name therefore refers not only to a single historical object, but also to its material, original colouring and traditional attribution.
Wine and Regional Tasting
At Tenuta La Presa, the tasting begins with a guided tour of the vineyards, ageing cellar and sparkling-wine cellar. The wine-making method is explained during the tour. The guided tour of the estate and ageing cellar includes a tasting of five wines along with a selection of local salumi and formaggi. This means that a visit to Caprino Veronese can also be viewed through the combination of landscape, production and regional products.
