Pontepossero brings together the history of the ruling powers, sacred architecture, milling technology, and rice cultivation. For planning your trip, it is also important to distinguish between historical context, a mill that cannot be visited, an event held in May, and a named cycling route.

Historical traces and sacred history

A key point of reference is Corte Grimani. It was built in the 17th century by the Venetian Grimani family on the site of the former castle of Pontepossero. The family’s connection with the place goes back further: in the 15th century, it acquired the Pontepossero complex from Jacopo dal Verme. The history of the place includes the former castle site, the change of ownership in the 15th century, and the construction of Corte Grimani in the 17th century. The former castle should not be equated with the later-built Corte Grimani.

The religious history also offers two references from different periods. In the 12th century, the Church of All Saints in Pontepossero belonged to the canons of Verona Cathedral. The Church of All Saints (“Tutti i Santi”) in Pontepossero is also an 18th-century parish church. This historical picture is complemented by the medieval Motta of Pontepossero, which is catalogued as an archaeological site. These three details refer to different periods and should be considered separately when placing the site in context.

The mill on the Tione River

The Mulino e Pila di Pontepossero stands on the Tione River. It belonged to the Villa Grimani complex and has been documented since the 14th century. Originally, it was a grain mill with a wheel for the blacksmith’s hammer. In the second half of the 17th century, another wheel was added for hulling rice. This detail makes the connection between milling technology and rice processing especially concrete: the use of the facility changed without its earlier function disappearing as a result.

The Mulino e Pila da riso di Pontepossero cannot be visited. For your planning, this means that the mill can be understood as a historical point of reference, but not as a destination for an on-site visit. Its documented history can nevertheless be traced through its location on the Tione, its affiliation with the Villa Grimani complex, and the development of its technical equipment.

Rice, event date, and cycling route

Another connection to rice culture can be found in Pontepossero di Sorgà: the Sagra del riso e saltarei takes place there in May. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with this festival, May is the relevant period. Independently of this, the Strada del riso cycling route leads to Pontepossero at the confluence of the Tione River and the Fossa Gambisa. For independent planning, you can therefore distinguish between a seasonal event date and a specific route.
