Sorgà – Rice Fields, Historic Estates and Heritage Sites
Accommodation in Sorgà
Sorgà combines a distinctive rice-growing landscape with historic buildings, frescoes and local traditions. The Strada del Riso crosses the entire area of Sorgà from north to south. It runs along country roads, rivers and rice fields rich in herons. In the Sorgà area, the rice fields cover approximately one thousand Veronese fields.
Strada del Riso and Rice-Growing Tradition
The rice-growing landscape is also linked to the region’s food culture. Sorgà lies within the designated production area of Riso Nano Vialone Veronese (PGI). The Vialone Nano Veronese rice-growing tradition dates back 500 years. At La Casa del Vino in Sorgà, local dishes such as Trippa alla parmigiana, Baccalà and donkey ragù with Amarone are served. These are accompanied by local cured meats and wines, which are also available by the glass.
Historic Estates, Frescoes and Legends
Corte Bugna detta Belvedere was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. Corte Bugna detta Belvedere contains 16th-century frescoes attributed to Giulio Romano. Notable rooms include the “Stanza di Cesare”, with its illusionistic painted architecture.
The “Palazzon del Diavolo” was built in Sorgà in the second half of the 16th century, based on designs by Giulio Romano. The “Palazzon del Diavolo” is associated with legends about the devil, ghosts and the “pozzo rasador”. Corte Italia presents another historic architectural type: the typical estate includes a manor house, stables, arcades and workers’ houses arranged in a row. Corte Grimani preserves the originality and elegance of its 17th-century forms.
Further Historical Heritage
Chiesa di Pampuro was built in the 15th century and preserves fragments of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes. Casa Natale di Antonio Ascari was completely restored after years of disuse. At the entrance to “Ca' Ascarì”, a commemorative plaque marks the birthplace of Antonio Ascari.
Mulino e Pila di Pontepossero has been documented since the 14th century. It is not open to visitors and lies directly beside the Tione River. This explicit restriction is part of understanding the site, as is its long documented history.
