Trevenzuolo among churches, villas and rice-growing landscapes

Trevenzuolo combines a multifaceted architectural history with a landscape in which water, rice cultivation and rural culture are closely documented. This creates a destination whose distinctive character lies less in a single attraction than in the combination of several historic sites: churches preserve medieval and late Gothic art, villas tell of estates shaped by agriculture, and the Strada del Riso Vialone Nano Veronese runs through the surrounding area.

Churches and artistic monuments

The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Trevenzuolo “Santa Maria Maddalena” was first mentioned as a parish church in 1145 and was under the authority of San Zeno Abbey. During work in the early 1940s, it acquired a monumental Neoclassical façade. Inside is a painting depicting the risen Christ appearing to Mary Magdalene; it was executed as a copy by Battista Amigazzi. A single church building thus illustrates both the long institutional history and a specific art-historical feature. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Fagnano “Santo Nome di Maria Vergine” also preserves notable individual works. These include an octagonal baptismal font dating from 1432 and a late Gothic fresco of the Madonna and Child enthroned. The Villa Giona Treves de' Bonfigli detta Corte San Bernardino complements this picture with an oratory built by Bartolomeo Antonio Formenti in 1474. The same villa also contains a painting attributed to Francesco Benaglio or to an artist working in his circle. This cautious attribution remains part of the art-historical classification.

Villas, farmsteads and historic water management

Several complexes bring the area’s agricultural past to life. The Villa Allegri detta Corte Granda comprises barchesse, homes for farm workers, an oratory dedicated to Saint Anthony and large courtyards used for drying grain, especially rice. A frescoed room from the second half of the 18th century is dedicated to local rice cultivation. Corte Spolverini is a stately building from the 17th century and is also known as Corte Sant’Eurosia. Corte Azzini dates from the 15th century and stands at the crossing over the Demorta before Trevenzuolo when approaching from Verona. The Villa Pellegrini detta Corte Chiara is divided into two parts by the Tione River. It includes an oratory dedicated to Saint Simon, whose architecture is dated to the mid-18th century. The Villa Curtoni Tretti detta Cortalta has a 140-metre-long southern front with the central manor house, two lateral barchesse and two terminating towers. It is located in Roncolevà, within the municipality of Trevenzuolo, near the border with the Province of Mantua. At the Gamandone, the water once powered a mill and a pila; the pila was built by the Curtoni brothers in 1649. This site explicitly refers to an earlier use that is now understood in historical terms.

Rice, resurgences and regional culture

The Strada del Riso Vialone Nano Veronese runs through Trevenzuolo and showcases Riso Vialone Nano Veronese as well as traditional dishes such as Risotto con il Tastasal and Risotto all’isolana. At the same time, it passes through a typical rural landscape of the resurgences, with abundant water and some wetlands. Anyone wishing to understand Trevenzuolo through its regional cuisine and landscape will therefore find a connection here between agricultural heritage, specific products and a water-rich environment. Another cultural highlight is the Arena Verde, a theatre in Trevenzuolo located in a historic private park.
