Accommodation in Pacengo
Pacengo combines a distinctive lakeside setting with historic buildings, archaeological traces and leisure activities.
Harbour, Lakeside and Cycle Promenade
The harbour area of Pacengo is a green space surrounded by pebble and grass beaches. From the harbour, a cycle promenade leads towards Peschiera del Garda. This means that the lakeside is characterised not only by the lake itself, but also by a clearly designated route for cycling excursions. Those who primarily want to experience Pacengo through its landscape and water will find a specific starting point within the town here.
Church and Historic Villas
The parish church of San Giovanni Battista was built between 1787 and 1792. Its temple-like façade features four Ionic half-columns and a semicircular balustrade. Inside are three altars made of polychrome marble with inlay work, as well as works and frescoes executed on canvas depicting the life of John the Baptist.
South of Pacengo, in the hamlet of Mattarana, Villa Giuli stands on a lakeside terrace. The villa is built in the Florentine style and has a square floor plan, two storeys and an attic. It also includes an oratory dedicated to the Holy Family. Liturgical vestments and sacred objects used by Don Giovanni Calabria are kept there. The garden, facing the lake, contains tall trees, including plane trees, cedars of Lebanon, firs, poplars, palms and a stately yew.
The historic villa landscape also includes Villa De Beni in the Pacengo district. It was originally built in the 16th century by the Sagramoso family. It is surrounded by a large park on three sides; a long avenue lined with olive trees runs through vineyards. Villa Balladoro is described as a typical Venetian building from the late 15th century with a square floor plan. A document from 1453 describes the estate and dates its original construction to that period.
Archaeological Traces and Local History
Pacengo also offers points of reference for a historical classification that extends far beyond the villas and the parish church. Foundations of buildings and remains of Roman structures have been found in the town. Numerous significant Bronze Age finds were discovered in the Bor and Porto areas during the second half of the 19th century. The remains of a large pile-dwelling village also came to light.
One particular event stands out in the town's more recent history: on 28 April 1848, during the First Italian War of Independence, Pacengo was the scene of a battle between Austrian and Piedmontese troops. The battle was won by the Piedmontese.
